Greenberg to take emergency training

Commissioner plans to be certified in incident command

Blaine County Commissioner Jacob Greenberg said during a commissioners meeting Tuesday that he is working with the county’s Local Emergency Planning Committee and plans to take a course this year to become certified in a national incident command system.

The training is part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Incident Management System, which guides interactions among government agencies and nongovernment organizations during emergencies.  

Commissioner Larry Schoen said in an interview that both he and Commissioner Angenie McCleary have taken the course, as had former Commissioner Tom Bowman. Police and fire chiefs also take the course.

Bowman used the training while serving as a civilian incident commander during the 2007 Castle Rock Fire. Schoen said the training could also help commissioners deal with a situation such as the one that occurred in January when someone used a shotgun to blast through a glass door for entry into Wood River High School.

Greenberg said he would take two courses online and finish his training with a course at the Blaine County Public Safety Facility later this year. He did not return a call by press time seeking to determine how he expected to use his training or when it would be completed. 

However, Schoen said he feels the training is an important part of the county’s emergency operations plan.

“It’s a preparedness thing,” he said. “We all want to be prepared.”
