Morganís carries top seed into Gund Cup playoffs

Hockey league semi-finals on Tuesday

Two games on Tuesday night at Sun Valley Skating Center finalized the Gund Cup Senior “A” Hockey League semi-final tournament match-ups that will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 26 on resort ice.

Morgan’s Fine Finishes (8-4-0) has earned the top seed in the four-team tournament and will face off against No. 4-seeded Lefty’s Bar  & Grill (2-10-0) on Tuesday in the 9:10 p.m. late game.

Clashing Tuesday in the 8 p.m. early contest will be Yoga College (7-5-0) and Sun Valley Auto Club/Grumpy’s (7-5-0). The winners on Tuesday will advance to the tournament championship game March 5.

This week’s games saw Morgan’s slip past SV Auto Club/Grumpy’s by a 3-1 score, while Yoga College goalie Billy Cook racked up the shutout in his team’s 6-0 rout over Lefty’s.

Morgan’s had to battle from behind after Bryan Speth got Grumpy’s on the scoreboard first, assisted by Dave Hennessy. Tyler Hanson equalized for Morgan’s in the second period, then Jamie Hjort netted the go-ahead goal for the winners on a tip from Chris Benson and Chris Zarkos.

Doug Yeates finished the scoring for Morgan’s with an empty net goal. John Ellison Jr. added two assists.

Yoga benefited from two goals apiece by Tate Mills and Bryan O’Connell. Zach Crist and Jack Weekes added single goals. Assists came from Kris Webster (2), Mills (2), Clint Lightner, Brad Dredge and Mark Belanger.
