Hailey to host high school rodeo

Local competition is first since 1997

The Wood River High School rodeo team will compete in Hailey this year for the first time in 16 years.

“This is a big deal,” said the school’s rodeo advisor, Kelli Taylor. “It’s great for the community and great for the kids. There’s nothing like community support.”

The event will take place on the weekend of May 3-4 at the newly rebuilt Hailey rodeo arena in Werthheimer Park on Main Street. The event will not replace the annual high school rodeo competition in Carey, which takes place the following weekend. The Carey event typically gathers about 300 spectators.

Both events are part of competitions in the Idaho High School Rodeo Association’s District 5, which includes all towns in southern Idaho north of the Snake River.

“A lot of people in Hailey can’t travel to all these other towns, so they miss what the local kids are doing,” Taylor said.

The Wood River High School rodeo team includes senior Larissa Roberts and sophomore Tayler Bosch, who together will compete at goat tying, breakaway, pole bending, barrel racing and cutting.

Teammate Riley Beck, a junior, will compete at bull riding for the first time.

Harlee Manning, a seventh-grader at Wood River Middle School, will compete in the Wrangler Division.

The Sawtooth Rangers riding club will volunteer help with the rodeo and sponsor a banner across Main Street advertising it.

The District 5 final competition will take place in Shoshone on Memorial Day weekend.

District 5 rodeo meet schedule

March 9: Twin Falls, first cutting competition.
April 12-13: Glenns Ferry.
April 19-20: Gooding.
April 26-27: Shoshone.
May 3-4: Hailey.
May 10-11: Carey.
May 24-25: Shoshone, district finals.
