‘Focus on Cinema’ with the Magic Lantern Cinemas
   The Sun Valley Center for the Arts and the Magic Lantern Cinemas will launch a new film series with 2013 Academy Award-nominated animated shorts and live action shorts at the Cinemas on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 4:30 and 7 p.m. followed by a reception with wine from The Center.
   Animated shorts are “Head Over Heels,” “Maggie Simpson in the Longest Daycare,” “Paperman,” “Fresh Guacamole,” “Adam and Doc,” “Abiogenesis,” “Dripped” and “The Graffalo’s Child.” Live action films are “Asad,” “Buzkashi Boys,” “Curfew,” “Death of a Shadow” and “Henry.”
   The event kicks off a spring series created by both art houses with the aim of bringing cutting-edge, independent dramatic and documentary films rarely seen here. “Phantom of the Opera” will be screened on Feb. 28 and the documentary “Coast Modern” on March 7 with special guest architect George Suyama.
   Special screenings will include operas, Broadway shows, concerts and other live performances. Tickets for these evenings will be $10 for Center members and $12 for nonmembers. They are available at the cinema in Ketchum. For details, visit www.sunvalleycenter.org or www.magiclanterncinemas.com.

Paw and Pole: a fuzzyfest on snow this weekend
   The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley will hold the 28th annual Paw ’n’ Pole with the theme of superheroes on Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Croy Nordic Ski Trails in Hailey.
   There will be ski and snowshoe races in addition to costume and pet trick contests. A chili lunch will be provided for participants by Atkinsons’ Markets and a raffle will be held for a 2013-14 BCRD Nordic and canine pass.
   “You don’t have to be faster than a speeding bullet or leap tall buildings in a single bound to participate in this year’s superhero themed event,” said Brittany Farrell, volunteer and events coordinator for the animal shelter. “If you love dogs and outdoor fun, you will be guaranteed to have a great time,”
   The Barkin’ Basement Thrift Store will be featuring superhero themed apparel to help people and their dogs find great costumes for the event.
   Online registration is now open on the shelter’s website so participants can sign up before the event. People interested in participating who don’t have a dog can contact the shelter after registering online and get matched up with a dog to be their “sidekick” for the event. On site registration is at 9:30 a.m. and the races start at 10 a.m. Registration is $5 to $25.
   The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, the first “no kill” shelter in Idaho, promotes companion animal welfare by providing temporary shelter for homeless animals, adopting them to qualified homes and reducing animal abuse, neglect and overpopulation through community education and spay/neuter services. The shelter is funded almost entirely by private donations and grants.
