Wood River High School‘s fourth-year wrestling coach Shawn Huntington is pleased to have another of his matmen, sophomore Jackson Toothman, joining the big Wolverine group headed to Pocatello Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23.

There, 11 Wood River wrestlers will compete in the 56th annual State 4A Wrestling Championships sponsored by the Idaho High School Activities Association at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena.

Huntington said Friday, “I just found out that the Burley wrestler who placed third at our district tournament at 182 pounds will not be going to state. Since Jackson Toothman placed fifth at that weight he will be replacing the Burley wrestler—now making it 11 to state for Wood River!”

Senior Tommy Bailey is making his fourth trip to state for Wood River. Seniors Storm Anderson and Tim Boyle along with junior Cooper Bailey are three-time state qualifiers. Making state a second time: Senior Jared Anderson, Thomas Heiden and Chris Carnes.

Defending State 4A team champion is Kuna (281.5 points). Wood River placed 17th last year with 42 points. Over the last four years the Wolverines have qualified nine, seven, seven and now 11 for state.

Friday’s first session of wrestling on 16 Holt Arena mats is from 9:30-11 a.m. followed by Session 2 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Consolation loser-out matches are 1-2:30 p.m., with quarterfinals from 3-4:30 p.m. and more consolation matches from 5-6:30 p.m.

Saturday’s consolation loser-out round, semi-finals and finals take place from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Parade of Athletes starts at 3:30 p.m. followed by the championship round. General admission is $15 Friday. Tournament passes are $28.
