Holiday weekend expected to be busy

Hotel occupancy predicted to be high

Express Staff Writer

Wood River Valley business owners should gear up for what is expected to be a busy Presidents Day weekend.

According to a Sun Valley Marketing Alliance occupancy report, projected occupancy rates for valley hotels and motels this weekend are 79 percent in Ketchum and Sun Valley, and 33 percent in Hailey. Last year, actual occupancy rates were 83 percent and 55 percent, respectively. In 2011, the actual rates were 80 percent and 40 percent, respectively.

The Marketing Alliance report does not factor in occupancy of rental homes, condos, friends’ houses and other places visitors might stay, but is an indicator of how much visitor activity the area can expect to see.

Sun Valley Co. spokesman Jack Sibbach said Wednesday that the resort is making preparations for a busy weekend.

“We’re expecting a very good weekend and for our numbers to stay up into next week,” he said. “We predict our numbers will be bigger than last year, but not significantly so. We’re ramping up our service, making sure we’ll have employees in place where they’ll be needed. We’re all on board to work hard.”

Sibbach said the resort expects to host, in particular, many families for Washington’s birthday.

“Anytime there’s a school holiday for the kids, the families come,” he said. “We’re excited to have them all here.”
