Couples' month

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

Oh, look, I missed writing about St. Valentine’s Day. The day for love couples was yesterday. But what’s next on this romantic month? Hmmm, Presidents Day is on the horizon, or as we know it in Idaho—Mattress Sales Weekend. For this holiday, we combine Abraham Lincoln’s and George Washington’s birthdays to allow the work force an opportunity to spend more money in order for commercial businesses to prosper. Coincidentally, “Lincoln” is one of the highest grossing motion pictures coming into the Presidents Day weekend. It’s the best Lincoln has ever done in a theater.

It’s a big boon to Sun Valley and the skiing industry, as well. The slopes promise to be jammed with winter sports enthusiasts, and these visitors should very well help our local economy even if we just rent them a bed instead of buying one to honor the holidays for couples in February.

On the international scene, “America’s sweetheart,” Lindsey Vonn, recently suffered a serious injury while training for a World Cup race and faces forfeiting her season due to her “eye of the tiger” style of competition. I understand that Tiger sent his plane for her, fueling the love rumors of “the ski bunny and the hound dog” as another example of couples in February.

You’ve got to love these winter love stories that continue to emerge this year. You do … but I don’t. I mean, what’s next—Lance Armstrong and Taylor Swift? There are plenty of couples just waiting in the wings you’d never imagine. How about Hillary and Dennis Rodman or Gabby and Helen Hayes? There’s a rumor festering right now about Ray and Shari and “Lambchop” Lewis. Someone mentioned to me, just recently, the union of Kobe and Anita Bryant. How about Ma Donna and Pop Warner? And, please, don’t forget about Reggie and Laura Bush—who knew?

Well, I hope you have a great weekend and you find someone to cuddle up with on these cold winter nights. Love is in the air. I’ll be in my cabin with a new mattress.

Nice talking to you.
