Community mosaic project launched

Hailey Arts Commission gives $500

     A group of artists, students and arts advocates have begun collecting shards of pottery, glass and other colorful materials for use in a community art project at the Community Campus in Hailey.

     The materials will be incorporated into designs for mosaics that will be hung on a wall near the Community Campus cafe.

     A mosaic is picture or design made from many small items pasted together on a panel or wall.

     “It would be fun to see various clubs, organizations, artists and schools add their designs for a communitywide project incorporating many thoughts and ideas and inspirations,” said Hailey Arts Commissioner Angela Hicks.

     The Hailey Arts Commission launched the community mosaic project last month with a $500 pledge for the cost of materials to begin a 2-by-8-foot panel. A group of seven artists gathered two weeks ago at the Community Campus to present ideas for designs on the mosaic panel and brainstorm about how it would be built.

     “Our thoughts at this time are to use French cleat mounting brackets for installation so that more mosaic pieces can be added or moved about in the event that we can take the project to the community and continue to add mosaic pieces,” Hicks said. “We hope to use our initial mosaic project as an example to move forward to obtain sponsors or grants to take the project to a broader level.”

     The initial inspiration for the mosaic project came from Wood River High School student Fidel “Pablo” DeLeon, who completed a mosaic triptych as his senior project. He and his mentor, Minna Casser, approached the Arts Commission to find a place to install his project upon completion.

     “This inspired enthusiastic discussion and the possibility of a community mosaic project happening in Hailey,” Hicks said.

     Weekly sessions to design and create the mosaic are scheduled for Wednesday evenings from 6-8 p.m. at the Community Campus Room 815, on Fox Acres Road in Hailey.
