Soldier to stage downhills, Sammis/Camas Cup

     Soldier Mountain Ski Area north of Fairfield is once again hosting “Speed Week,” Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 11-12 highlighted by the 16th annual Sammis/Camas Cup downhill races on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

     This year’s Sammis/Camas Cup race chairman is Deeder Petersen. Chief of Race is Meri Stratton. Chief of Course is Scott Curtis, and the course setter for 2013 is Mike Levy.

     Former “Speed Week” organizer Ken Corrock said, “The Cup is a memorial event named for Brett Sammis. He was a former junior racer with a touch for downhill. He tragically lost his life in a skiing accident on Baldy. The race not only a memorial for Brett, but a home for all of his friends to keep the downhill spirit alive.”

     The Sammis/Camas Cup Downhill Committee is hosting a junior downhill training camp Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 11-12. For $66 per day including a lift ticket, skiers will get sectioning and timed training on Monday, plus two simulated races Tuesday. Sammis/Camas Cup competitors have the option of training on the track that Monday, for $40.

     Training camp will start with sign-ups and a mandatory racer meeting at the Soldier Lodge at 8 a.m. Monday. Feb. 11. Training occurs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. that day. You must sign up for the training camp by Friday, Feb. 8 at 12 noon. at curly3203@cox.net.

     Sign up for the Sammis/Camas Cup downhill at Soldier Lodge Tuesday by 9 a.m. The downhill itself takes place at 2 p.m. that day, preceded by training runs at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Entry fee for the Sammis/Camas Cup only is $40, including lift ticket.

     In conjunction with the training camp and Sammis/Camas Cup, there will be separate U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) Masters men’s and women’s downhill races on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Cost is $120 for the series, including training and two races.

     Sign up for the USSA races by Friday, Feb. 8 at noon at skiracereg.com. Mandatory training runs are Monday, Feb. 11 for the USSA events.
