Carey girls shock Blue Devils 41-40 for title

First ever Northside crown

     There was much to celebrate Wednesday night for the Carey High School girls’ varsity basketball team down at Dietrich.

     Carey’s red-hot No. 2-seeded squad captured its ninth straight win and ended the three-season, 50-game winning streak of the top-seeded Dietrich Blue Devils with a 41-40 victory in the championship game of the eight-team Northside Conference tournament.

     Senior Morgan Parke (5 points) made the eventual game-winning basket with 25 seconds remaining—after freshman Medin Cenarrusa banked home a game-tying 3-pointer from the right wing, making it 39-39 at 36 seconds.

     First-year head coach Merrilee Sears guided the Panthers (15-6) to the school’s first-ever Northside girls’ tournament title. Carey secured the school’s second straight State 1A Division 2 tournament berth—and fifth in six years.

     The coach said Carey’s defense was critical to the upset triumph.

     Sears said, “We tried to do three things—take care of the ball, not give up easy baskets and play defense. I asked the girls to stay in the game with Dietrich and give ourselves a chance to win. They did that. Our goal was to go to state and we achieved that.

     “I’m a firm believer that if you can play defense, you can be successful. And the girls have bought into that.”

     Carey limited Dietrich to 25% field goal shooting and minimized the always-demoralizing Blue Devils transition baskets. Carey shot 37% from the field.

     Senior guard Jaide Parke (15.9 ppg), who led Carey with 16 points, became the all-time leading Panther scorer. She entered the game needing seven to tie her older sister Jessica Parke, whose 1,168 points in 2010 was the previous school mark. Jaide ended Wednesday’s game with 1,177.

     Another Panther senior, Angelica Zarate, scored a season-high 8 points. Cenarrusa finished with 5 points, Lilly Rivera 2 and Ashley Durtschi 2. Jacey Shaw topped Dietrich with a 17-points night.

     By beating two-time defending state champion Dietrich (22-1), Carey advanced to the State 1A Division 2 tournament. Its first game is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 14, at 8 p.m. at Nampa High against the winner of a Feb. 9 state play-in game between the 2nd and 3rd District runner-up teams.

     Dietrich’s last loss came on its home court, 55-43 to Richfield in the Northside tournament championship game in 2011. Those two teams played for second place Thursday.

     Carey had lost eight straight games to Dietrich, the last four by margins of 41, 29, 29 and 14 points, since its last victory over the Blue Devils 43-31 in Carey on Jan. 26, 2010.
