WRHS boys play extra time to nip ‘Hawks 55-53

League tourney opens Tuesday

     They needed overtime, but the Wood River High School boys’ varsity basketball team hung tough and held off the upset-minded Canyon Ridge Riverhawks 55-53 Friday in Twin Falls. Both teams recorded season-high point totals.

     Sophomores Cody Carter (17 points, three 3-pointers) and Connor Hayes (16 points, two 3s) came up with season-best offensive efforts and the Wolverines (6-11, 1-7 league) shot a season-high 18-for-31 at the free throw line to beat host Canyon Ridge (0-16, 0-8 league).

     The outcome snapped a five-game skid for coach Andy Miles’ Wolverines and boosted their victory total to the most for a Hailey boys’ squad since coach John Radford’s 2007 team went 10-13. Other scorers were Max Mauldin 8 points, Eron Bates 6, Alec Nordsieck 5 and Kevin Hernandez 3.

     Wood River swept the season series with Canyon Ridge and assured itself at least a No. 5 seed for the six-team Great Basin Conference tournament starting Tuesday, Feb. 12.

 

“Senior Night” and Boatwright salute tonight

     Wood River High will honor retired teacher and boys’ basketball coach Jim Boatwright during “Senior Night” for the Wolverine boys’ basketball team today, Wednesday, Feb. 6 in games against the Minico Spartans at the Hailey gym.

     Minico (7-11, 3-6 league) lost 53-28 at home to league-leading Twin Falls Friday but managed to hold off Wood River 49-42 in Rupert Jan. 18. Wood River fell behind by 13 points at half in that road game and will be seeking a better start tonight.

     Friday, Wood River’s regular-season slate comes to a close with a non-league game at Gooding (7-10). The Senators, 35-30 losers at Hailey Dec. 4, have dropped four of their last five games including a 60-35 home setback to Buhl Friday.

     Wood River High athletic director John Rade said it was appropriate to honor coach Boatwright tonight in a game played against his alma mater.

     Boatwright graduated from Rupert’s Minico High School in 1970, where he lettered in basketball, track and golf. He led the Spartans to back-to-back state basketball championship games in 1969 and 1970. As a junior, he averaged 37 points per game during the state meet. He still ranks among the top Minico all-time scorers.

     Having earned a slew of All-State and All-American honors, Boatwright received a scholarship to play at Utah State University. He was the top scorer both his junior and senior seasons at Logan and was named Utah State's top athlete in 1974.

     Boatwright joined the European Professional Basketball League and played eight years for Maccabi Tel Aviv, Israel. Maccabi won the European Championship in 1977 and Boatwright was the team's leading scorer. He was selected as a member of the Israeli Olympic basketball team for the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

     For the last nine years, Boatwright has conducted his Snowline Summer Basketball Camp in Hailey.

     He was assistant boys’ basketball coach to head coach Fred Trenkle at Wood River for three seasons from 2003-06. During those three years the Wolverines went 21-48 and, in 2004, posted an 11-14 record with eight league wins en route to a state tournament berth.

     Boatwright will be honored at halftime of today’s boys’ basketball game. The Wolverine senior boys’ basketball players and cheerleaders and their parents will be saluted before the game.
