The Carey High School girls’ basketball team (12-6, 6-1 league) won the game it needed Tuesday, and now has a chance to host two 1A Division 2 Northside Conference tourney games in the next few days.

Seniors Jaide Parke (18 points) and Morgan Parke (13) led the visiting Panthers over Richfield 41-29 Tuesday and earned the second seed into the eight-team Northside meet that begins Saturday, Feb. 2 with four first-round contests.

Freshman Medin Cenarrusa (6 points), senior Angelica Zarate (2) and junior Ashley  Durtschi (2) rounded out the scoring for Carey (12-for-16 free throws). Danielle Edwards (10) topped Richfield, which led 17-16 at halftime before Carey out-scored the Tigers 25-12 after.

Carey’s sixth straight win, all in league play, meant the Panthers host No. 7 Murtaugh Saturday at 7 p.m. If the seeds hold up in tomorrow’s first-round games, Carey and No. 3 Richfield (13-6, 5-2) will clash again Monday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m., this time on the Panther floor.

The winner of Monday’s game will likely advance to meet No. 1-seeded Dietrich (20-0), winner of 48 straight games, in the tournament championship game Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Gooding High School gym.

The top two teams automatically qualify for the State 1A Division 2 tournament Feb. 14 at Nampa High School, while the third-place team must win a Feb. 9 state play-in game at American Falls to make state.

Other first-round games Saturday: No. 1 Dietrich hosting No. 8 Bliss; No. 4 Lighthouse Christian Academy hosting No. 5 Castleford; and No. 3 Richfield entertaining No. 6 Camas County of Fairfield.

Last year, top-seeded Dietrich defeated No. 2 Richfield 36-34 in overtime for the district championship, then No. 3 Carey earned second place 43-42 in overtime over Richfield to earn the second state tournament berth from the Northside league.

Richfield advanced to the 2012 state tournament winning a play-in game 56-39 over Meadows Valley.

At state, Dietrich (24-0) won its second straight state championship and third overall by a 53-52 score in overtime over Summit Academy (19-7). Carey (16-8) captured third place 47-43 over Mackay (14-9) and Richfield (19-8) collected the consolation trophy by a 40-36 score over Tri-Valley (15-8). Dietrich also won the 2011 state title in extra sessions, 55-51 in triple overtime over Richfield.
