SVSEF brings Flood, Cheeso races to Baldy

Saturday through Monday

The coming weekend is a major one for cross-country skiers with the fourth annual Sun Valley Nordic Festival, but young alpine ski racers are also looking forward to a major event on Baldy this weekend.

Laura Flood Memorial FIS Intermountain Cup giant slalom and slalom races for the A, U-21 and U-18 classes are Saturday through Monday, Feb. 2-4. They will coincide with the Cheeso Memorial U-16 qualifying races, also on Hemingway and Cozy ski runs.

The 23rd annual Flood Memorial presented by the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation honors the memory of the Sun Valley racer who died in 1990 at age 19. Giant slaloms are Saturday and Sunday on Hemingway, wrapped up by slalom Monday on Cozy.

In its second year, the Cheeso Memorial salutes Craig "Cheeso" Kjesbo. He fought a brave three-year battle with cancer before passing away in Jan. 2009 at 57. For 26 years, he was one of the best and most influential SVSEF coaches.

“There was never a bad day on the mountain for Cheeso, and he translated that to all the kids he coached,” said Lane Monroe, former SVSEF executive director and head coach.

“Cheeso” races designed for the 14-15 age classes are slalom on Saturday and Sunday on Cozy, with giant slalom Monday on Hemingway. Awards for the separate race events will be presented Monday at 3:30 p.m. at Apple’s Bar & Grill.

     · SVSEF alpine racers competed Sunday and Monday in the first two days of the four-day, 187-racer Western Region Elite Tech Series at Snowbird, Utah (women, slalom) and Park City (men’s giant slalom). Top placings and their classes were:

     7—Kyle Miller U-18. 8—KJ Savaria and Jordan Fitzgerald U-18. 9—Sofi Leroux U-21. 10—Amanda Stelling U-21. 16—Linnea Baysinger U-18 and Harlan Collins of Rocky Mountain College U-21. 26—Veronica Gaspar U-18. 27—Miles Sweek U-21. 34—Jenna Lou Jansky U-18.

     · Correction: SVSEF U-14 racer Cooper Dart earned a first-place class finish during the Wes Barron Speed Series super giant slaloms Jan. 19-21 at Jackson Hole (Wyo.) Mountain Resort.
