Snowboarders bring their skills to Dollar

Big Mountain races arrive

Sun Valley’s Dollar Mountain is the site for an exciting four days of snowboard racing this weekend, hosted by the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation.

“It should be a great week of events,” said Andy Gilbert, program director of the Sun Valley Snowboard Team.

Sun Valley Resort is the first stop on the new United States of America Snowboard Association (USASA) Big Mountain West Snowboard Series

It’s the first contest of what promises to be a busy season for a group of eager SVSEF riders. “I know the kids are super excited and they have put in a lot of hard work,” Gilbert said.

Thursday’s opening day of racing featured boardercross, giant slalom and slalom. Two boardercross races take the spotlight today, Friday. Gilbert said he has up to 75 pre-registered riders for the crowd-pleasing boardercross.

The biggest field in terms of numbers is Saturday when slopestyle takes center stage. Gilbert said, “We have 110 pre-registered and expect to sell out this event at 120 to 125.”

Sunday’s halfpipe for up to 70 riders finishes off the Dollar Mountain series. Competition begins at 10 a.m. each day.

Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. each day with practice at 9 a.m. Morning sessions start at 10 a.m. with afternoon starts ranging from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Awards are held in front of Carol's Dollar Mountain Lodge.
