Carey’s cage teams keep rolling along

Panther girls, boys stretch win streaks

It was a good night for both Carey High School varsity basketball teams Tuesday in Northside Conference home games against the Murtaugh Red Devils. And Carey senior Jaide Parke pulled ever closer to breaking the school’s all-time girls’ career scoring mark.

Parke (12 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 assists) helped coach Merrilee Sears’ Panthers (10-6, 4-1 league) to their fourth consecutive victory 49-16 over Murtaugh. Parke (16.3 ppg) improved her four-year career total to 1,102 points, trailing only older sister Jessica Parke (1,129).

Carey’s top scorer in Tuesday’s romp was senior Morgan Parke (19 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocked shots). Junior Lilly Rivera (6 points, 3 rebounds, 7 steals, 4 assists) set the offense in motion as the Panthers piled up 16 assists. Murtaugh committed 26 turnovers.

Other Panthers were Kylie Castle (4 points), Medin Cenarrusa (4 points, 2 boards, 2 steals), Angelica Zarate (1 point, 6 rebounds, 2 assists), Natalie Villanueva (3 points), Paige Koudelka (2 boards), Ashley Durtschi (4 assists) and Daphne Kirkland (2 assists).

Topping Murtaugh: Jeniffer Zavala (8 points, 5 rebounds) and Brooklyn Worthington (3 points, 7 boards, 4 blocks).

On Jan. 18 in Fairfield, Jaide Parke (21 points) and Morgan Parke (14) led Carey past Camas County 48-25. Stephanie Moore (8 points) led Camas.

Carey’s league game at Richfield Tuesday, Jan. 29 will finalize the regular season and seedings for the Northside tournament starting Saturday, Feb. 2. The Panthers are likely to finish in the top four of the eight-team league standings and earn a home game Feb. 2.

Also Tuesday, coach Dick Simpson’s Carey High School Panthers (10-5, 5-0 league) made it six straight wins 59-30 over Murtaugh. Shooting a lofty 54% from the field, the Panthers led 24-10 after one and 41-10 at half and finished with 16 steals and 16 assists for the night.

Nine Panthers scored topped by Nate Adamson (12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 6 assists, 2 blocks), Sheldon Hansen (11 points, 6 boards) and Jordan Dilworth (10 points, 4 steals, 4 assists). Leading Murtaugh were Jose Miranda (9 points, 4 steals) and Troy Baynes (8 points, 6 boards, 3 assists).

Contributing solid Carey bench minutes was Joe Parke (9 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals).

Poncho Gamino (1 point, 3 boards, 2 steals) played his first game after a knee injury. Others were Matt Whitworth (7 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists), Jayce Koudelka (5 points), Gunner Thompson (2 points, 2 boards), Luis Garcia (2 points) and Glen Andrews (2 boards).

Carey travels to Oakley today, Friday and goes to Richfield for its final conference game Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Other hoops this week

( Top scorers Taylor Adler (17 points) and Gunner Gibson (11) led the way again, but the Community School boys (3-10, 1-3 league) dropped the season series to Twin Falls Christian Academy Tuesday with a 41-33 setback in Twin falls.

The Cutthroats play Lighthouse Christian Saturday at old Jerome Middle School gym and host Richfield for another Northside Conference game Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m.

( Wood River’s boys’ varsity (5-9, 1-5) went up against one of the top Great Basin Conference teams Wednesday night in Hailey and dropped a 51-13 decision to Burley (12-4, 5-1). Eron Bates (6 points) led Wood River. The Wolverines host the other top GBC squad, Twin Falls (10-4, 5-0) today, Friday in Hailey.

( A slow start put a crimp into the plans of the Wood River High School’s girls’ varsity (2-15, 1-9) Tuesday night in a 34-25 Great Basin loss to the Minico Spartans at Rupert. Despite playing solid defense, Wood River trailed 19-2 at half.

Wood River played one of its better floor games, committing only 13 turnovers and out-rebounding Minico 31-23, but the Wolverines couldn’t finish. Hannah Belloli (8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals) hit two 3-pointers and the Wolverines went 8-for-15 at the charity line.

Others were Giselle Andrade (4 points, 4 boards), Rory Cole (4 points, 6 rebounds), Sydney Tidwell (4 points, 10 rebounds), Ciceley Peavey (3 points, 3 steals, 3 assists), Samantha Sutton (1 point, 6 boards) and Kenya Schott (1 point, 1 assist).

The six-team GBC league tournament opens Tuesday, Jan. 29 with Wood River traveling for a first-round game.
