Ski Sun Valley, help it fly
Fly Sun Valley Alliance and the Sun Valley Resort have teamed for Ski for Air Service Day, Sunday, Jan. 27, by offering a full-day $40 lift ticket for skiing at Sun Valley.
Ticket-holders will enjoy an après-ski party with a live reggae band from 3-5 p.m. at River Run Lodge featuring live music and a raffle offering a variety of prizes including four roundtrip tickets on Alaska Airlines. All proceeds for the day will support air service to Sun Valley.
Lift tickets are for sale in advance, for cash or credit card purchase only, from Jan. 16-26 at Sturtevants, Board Bin, PK’s Ski & Sports, Formula Sports and Ski Tek, as well as Elevation Sports in Twin Falls and Newt and Harold’s in Boise.
All proceeds from the sale of the Ski for Air Service lift tickets and raffle tickets will go to support the nonprofit Fly Sun Valley Alliance’s efforts to maintain and increase commercial air service to the Sun Valley area. Research shows that flights to Friedman Memorial Airport bring in more than 41,000 visitors and part-time residents each year with an annual estimated economic impact of more than $70 million in direct spending during their visits.

Tickets moving fast for Reggae in the Mountains
Bundle up and put on your party boots for Reggae in the Mountains featuring Pato Banton on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Simplot lot across from the Ketchum Post Office, presented by Mountain Niceness Productions.
The show will kick off at 7 p.m. with opening bands to include Soulmedic, Mega Baton and Voice of Reason. Tickets are $20 until Feb. 2 and $25 at the gate. VIP (very irie people) access to Reggae in the Mountains VIP sponsor’s tent is $100.
The evening will include bonfires, bars and food. This Reggae in the Mountains is also a celebration for a week of Nordic skiing, activities, education and fun at the 2013 Sun Valley Nordic Fest, Jan. 26 through Feb. 3.
When the show is over, head to Whiskey Jacques’ in Ketchum for the after party with dancehall reggae music at 10:30 p.m. with full sets by Mega Banton from Jamaica, Soul Medic from Hawaii and California, Obie Won from Ohio, Lions Den Sound Unlimited from California and DJ Vision from California. Cover charge at Whiskey’s will be $8.

Deadline looms for 2013 Sun Valley Center Arts & Crafts Festival
Artists are invited to apply for the 2013 Sun Valley Center Arts & Crafts Festival, to be held Aug. 9-11 at Atkinson Park in Ketchum. Applications are being accepted online now until Thursday, Feb. 28 at www.zapplication.org.
About 130 artists will be chosen to exhibit in next summer’s show through a competitive blind-jury process.
Now entering its 45th year, the Arts & Crafts Festival is ranked among the top 100 best art and craft shows in the country. Artists in all fine art and fine craft disciplines may apply. Artists agree to be present during all three days and to show only their own work made within the past five years in the category in which they are accepted. Full-time Blaine County residents will be granted an extra point during the jurying process to encourage participation and ensure a positive environment for local artists.

Help cover Ketchum in art
The city of Ketchum is encouraging artists in the Western U.S. to apply for its Cover Art project, a public art project whereby vinyl images of original art are applied on selected utility boxes throughout the city. Commissioned artists will receive $1,000 per utility box, and there is no fee to apply. The deadline for initial submissions is March 4.
This will be the second installation of Cover Art. In early fall 2012, six wrapped utility boxes featuring the work of Idaho artists were unveiled throughout the town, and will remain in place for about three years. According to a press release from the city, due to the public’s positive reaction, the program is being expanded in 2013 to include an additional five boxes.
Cover Art is organized and curated by the Ketchum Arts Commission. The application process takes place in two stages. The first is a request for qualifications, and the second is a request for proposals. Sun Valley Nordic Festival is waxing on in 2013
The fourth annual Sun Valley Nordic Festival promises another stellar lineup of events running from Jan. 26 to Feb. 3 in Sun Valley.
Start out the week with Ski the Rails, a skate or classic ski down the former railway turned bike path, followed by the Galena and the Trails benefit, an alpine touring race up and down Dollar Mountain, Twilight Ski and Dinner at magical Galena Lodge, AXCS national masters racing at Sun Valley Nordic to crown the best masters in the country, Nordic Hall of Fame inductions, panel discussion by Nordic industry bigwigs, the remixed Downtown Jam/NordicTown USA Sprints and Snowbike Competition featuring food, music and party vibe into the night, the Banff Film Festival and Marley and the Mountains with headliner Pato Banton, then finish it all up with the longest-running cross-country race in North America, the renowned Swix Boulder and Half Boulder Mountain Tour.

Sun Valley Screenwriter’s Lab
The Sun Valley Film Festival will kick off on March 14 with Spirit Award nominee Will McCormack, producer of the film “Celeste & Jesse Forever,” presenting an new interactive feature event of the festival, the Sun Valley Screenwriter’s Lab.
Original screenplays and television pilots will be accepted from aspiring screenwriters, and the three finalists will be awarded lodging and passes to the film festival. The winner will witness his or her work come alive during a table read of local and professional actors.
Participants in the lab will hear McCormack speak candidly about the ascent of his own career as a writer/actor and field questions about the trade.
The lab will run from 1-4 p.m. in the Sun Valley Resort Opera House. Tickets to attend are $25, and include a spirited Wyoming Whiskey-sponsored reception at the end of the lab. Submissions can be made online at www.sunvalleyfilmfestival.org; submission cost is $20 and deadline is Feb. 15.
Winner will be notified by Feb 28. The Screenwriters Lab is also open to those who do not wish to make a screenplay submission but would simply like to learn more about the craft.
The Sun Valley Film Festival will take place March 14-17.
