Carey boys extend win streak on court

Prep basketball summary

- Coach Dick Simpson’s Carey High School Panthers (9-5, 4-0 league) stretched their winning streak to five games with a 56-26 Northside Conference win over Camas County’s Mushers (2-10, 0-3) in Fairfield on Friday.

Senior Sheldon Hansen (three 3-pointers) tallied a season-best 16 points and Matt Whitworth added 13 to go with 10 points from top scorer Nate Adamson. Joe Parke added 8 points, Luis Garcia 5, Gunner Thompson 2 and Jordan Dilworth 2. Isaac Simon (9) and Erick Peterson (8) led Camas.

Carey hosted Murtaugh Tuesday and has another home game with Bliss Thursday, Jan. 24 before traveling to Oakley Friday. Defending league champions, Carey improved its chances to host a first-round game of the eight-team Northside varsity tournament starting Wednesday, Feb. 13.

- The Community School boys (3-9, 1-3) put together their best first half—building a 23-19 lead at intermission—and finished with a solid home outing in a 49-36 loss to Castleford (5-6) Thursday in Sun Valley.

Contributors were Taylor Adler (12 points, 12 boards, 2 steals), Gunner Gibson (10 points, 4 rebounds, 5 steals), Doug DuFur (3 points, 3 boards), Ken Cheng (2 points, 2 rebounds) and Nick Krekow (1 point, 4 boards, 2 assists). Castleford rebounded the Cutthroats by only a 38-33 margin.

The Cutthroats visit Murtaugh Thursday and play Lighthouse Christian Friday at old Jerome Middle School gym.

- Wood River High School’s girls’ varsity (2-14, 1-8) holds its “Senior Night” Thursday hosting Buhl, a team the Wolverines beat 32-27 at Buhl Dec. 1. The Great Basin Conference league tournament opens Tuesday, Jan. 29 with Wood River traveling that night for a first-round game.

Thursday in a possible GBC first-round preview, Wood River fell 54-22 at home to Burley (13-4). Sydney Tidwell (15 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks) had a solid all-around game. Others were Haylee Pettit (3 points, 2 boards), Kenya Schott (2 points, 1 assist), Ciceley Peavey (2 points, 2 steals) and Rory Cole (3 rebounds).

Saturday, Twin Falls beat host Wood River 51-17 as Cole had 5 points.

- Carey seniors Jaide Parke (23 points) and Morgan Parke (14) led the visiting Panthers (8-6, 2-2) past Castleford 59-23 Saturday, with 10 Panthers scoring. Carey moved closer to securing a first-round home game in the eight-team Northside tournament Saturday, Feb. 2.

- Wood River’s boys’ varsity (5-8, 1-4) tallied their second-highest point total in a 49-42 loss to Minico (6-7, 2-2) at Rupert Friday. Alec Nordsieck and Kevin Hernandez scored 12 points each and Eron Bates had 10. The Wolverines host Burley (11-4, 4-1) today in Hailey.
