Speed races put alpine skiers to a test

Courtesy photo by Heather Black, Heather Black Photography Sun Valley’s Samantha Busby just missed the win in Monday’s Wes Barron super giant slalom at Jackson Hole, finishing just .03 seconds behind winner Devan Lamere of the host Jackson Hole Ski Team.

Forty-three Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation alpine ski racers were in the field of 240 from Idaho, Utah and Wyoming Saturday through Monday on Moran and Lower Werner runs at Jackson Hole (Wyo.) Mountain Resort.

The three Wes Barron Speed Series super giant slaloms were the challenge for mainly U-16 (ages 14-15) racers with a few U-21s and U-18s, but there were separate heats for a large group of U-14 (12-13) kids.

SVSEF racers at the U-14 level enjoyed success in climbing the SG podium. One, Katelyn Rathfon, competed with the older racers and placed 14th and 31st overall out of nearly 80 in the field, winning her class Saturday.

Saturday, Molly Milgard clocked the fastest time by .25 seconds out of 47 U-14s. She placed second overall just .09 seconds out Sunday, and was second again Monday. Pilar Pennell podiumed in third place. For the U-14 boys, Cooper Dart podiumed in second place Sunday and Jake Blackburn was third Saturday.

Monday, U-16 Samantha Busby was second overall by the narrowest of margins in the 69-racer girls’ race. Taylor Cooper podiumed in U-16 boys with a third place.

Racing in Europe

In National Junior alpine racing in Europe, Kipling Weisel of the SVSEF recorded 14th and 20th finishes in giant slalom, and five top-50 results in slalom and GS.

Teammate KJ Savaria was 23rd and 37th in GS at Claviere, Italy, with two top-50s in slalom at Chatel, France.
