Nordic team takes first step to Junior Nationals

Nicholas Lovett and a solid block of Older Junior/J1 girls led the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation’s Junior Nordic 32-skier travel team last weekend during the first of three Junior National qualifying races at Bozeman, Mont.

Lovett, 18, won Sunday’s 10-kilometer freestyle race by two seconds and also captured Saturday’s 1.5k classic sprint final over SVSEF teammate Luke Costley, 18, in the OJ/J1 group for ages 16-19.

Sweeping the OJ/J1 podium in Saturday’s 1.5k classic sprint final for the women were winner Laurel Fiddler, second-place Jesse Knori and third-place Maggie Williams. In J2 boys, Zach Williams finished second in the classic sprint.Other podiums for Sun Valley in a field of 118 skiers in the OJ (18-19), J1 (16-17) and J2 (14-15) classes at Bohart Ranch: Peter Wolter second in Sunday’s J2 boys 5k skate; and Fiddler first and Maggie Williams third in Sunday’s 5k skate.

The weekend event set the stage for the next two Junior National qualifiers—Feb. 1-2 at Soldier Hollow, Utah and Feb. 16-17 at Bogus Basin near Boise. Junior Nationals are March 10-16 at Fairbanks, Ak.
