District’s decision harms students

I first want to thank the school board members, specifically Kathryn Graves and Paul Bates for the time and energy spent on the controversial Dual Immersion decisions.

The district did not give the board the capability to brainstorm with their constituents to find a good solution; instead they only gave them two options. This is unfortunate for our students; to date there is no other teaching method that has produced the increases in intelligence as is seen in immersion-style teaching.

As I can see that many in this valley still think Dual Immersion costs more than traditional teaching (which is false), just wait until the district pays the bills for the International Baccalaureate program. My vision is that they are looking toward implementing the unpopular and hugely expensive Primary Years program from the conglomerate International Baccalaureate Co. This is a travesty for our young if they do, as there are few benefits shown from their teaching methods (read the research results closely).

The district also failed to include in Partners for Education the contributions by the Dual Immersion students at the middle school; since 2008, the Dual Immersion students have shown increased scores above their peers.

The true problem is not that they cannot find teachers for the program, but that the district would have to replace some of the existing teachers with Dual Immersion teachers. Yes, it is not pleasant being out of work, as many of us know.

As is often the case, we overlook the benefits for our future generations due to a lack in administrative due diligence.  Between increased character education and a large number of highly educated administrators leaving our district, it is the students who are truly losing out.
