Who is your Woman of the Year?

Nominations now open for 4th annual award

The Idaho Mountain Express has launched its fourth annual call for nominations for women who work hard to make the Wood River Valley a better place.

Nominations for the 2013 Woman of the Year opened officially on Wednesday, Jan. 16, and will be open through Sunday, Feb. 3.

The Woman of the Year Award recognizes one local woman who has made the biggest difference to our valley over the last 12 months. The woman should have somehow made the Wood River Valley a better place through actions, contributions to the community and positive outlook on life.

The five women with the most nominations will be posted online for a public vote in early February. One will be chosen Woman of the Year and featured in the Idaho Mountain Express’ Valley Woman special section in late March.

Previous winners have included Senior Connection Executive Director Kim Coonis, former National Alliance on Mental Illness Executive Director Wendy Norbom and Blaine County educator Carla Scanlon.

Norbom, last year’s Woman of the Year, was chosen by voters from a group of 23 nominees. She was nominated for her work with the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts yearly Arts and Crafts Festival and the Community School.

Nominator Sandy Shaw said she nominated Norbom because of her tireless work to meet the needs of the valley’s mentally ill.

“She’s working to eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness and to make sure people in the Wood River Valley with mental illness have someplace to turn,” she said.

Nominated women must be residents of the Wood River Valley. Nominators should provide a brief description of why the woman they have chosen should win the Express’ 2013 Woman of the Year Award. Nominees must give their consent to be included in the final vote.

To enter, visit www.mtexpress.com/womanoftheyear/2013. The survey can also be accessed by going to the paper’s homepage, www.mtexpress.com and scrolling down to the “Valley Woman: Submit Nominations” button on the left side in the “Special Projects” menu.

Nominations close Sunday, Feb. 3, at 5 p.m. The official vote for Woman of the Year from the top five nominees will start on Feb. 6 and close Feb. 24.
