Freestylers fan out for moguls, pipe, slopestyle

At Park City, Snowbowl


Twenty-seven Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation freestyle skiers traveled to early-season competitions last weekend at Montana’s Snowbowl near Missoula and at Park City (Utah) Mountain Resort.

Freeskiers were in Utah for halfpipe and slopestyle.

Trevor Hattabaugh was overall runner-up and the M1 class winner in men's halfpipe. Jacob Beebe finished fourth overall (2-M3) and Perry Boyle was fifth (1-M2), then Beebe placed second (1-M3) in Friday’s next go-round of halfpipe.

Other top class placings among 17 SVSEF boys in pipe: 1—Will Griffith. 2—Wilder Curtis 4—River Kelly and Eli Roberts. 5—Hayes Gilman.

The field of competitors was larger (56 boys and girls) and high class results were tougher to come by in Thursday’s slopestyle at Park City.

Best slopestyle placings: 2—Will Griffith. 4—Wilder Curtis. 6—Eli Roberts. 8—River Kelly (18th overall). 9—Hayes Gilman. 10—Perry Boyle.

SVSEF mogul skiers cleaned up at Snowbowl

RJ Bracken and Zac Maricich-Siele finished first and second overall of 37 young men in Sunday’s dual moguls competition on Sunrise Bowl. Wyatt Wilson placed seventh in duals (2-M2) and Brody Buchwalter was ninth.

Bracken placed first and second overall in Saturday’s single moguls, trading places with first-run winner Michael Thomas of Missoula. Maricich-Siele was third (1-M2) and fifth (4-M2) in the field of 40 boys.

Indeed, in Saturday’s first moguls heat, Sun Valley placed six in the top 10.

Former SVSEF skier Aunika Phillips of Park City won the first moguls heat and was the dual moguls female champ. Right behind was SVSEF’s Morgan Shaver in second place (1-F1) and third (F-1). Teammate Renee Shapiro placed fourth (2-F2) and fifth (3-F2) in women’s moguls.

Other top single moguls class placings for SVSEF Saturday: 1—Alex Lafleur. 2—Katie Markthaler, Giselle Harmon and Buchwalter. 3—Parker Nance, Evathea Drougas, Eliza Marks, River Curtis and Blake Harmon. 4—Alysha Herich. 5—Addison Rafford. 6—Jack Rizzo. 7—Alec Poster and Cutter Grathwohl.

Meanwhile, two SVSEF freestyle skiers went through to the finals in the Revolution Tour at Northstar at Tahoe.

Coming back from serious and repeated knee injuries, Hannah Haupt was runner-up in women's skier halfpipe. Trevor Hattabaugh placed 12th in the men's skier halfpipe.

 

Freestyle Spectacular this weekend

The Sun Valley Freestyle Spectacular continues through Sunday, Jan. 20 on Dollar and Baldy. The first slopestyle and halfpipe runs took place Thursday and continue on Dollar today, Friday. Racing begins about 10:30 a.m. each day.

Mogul racing occurs Saturday (single moguls) and Sunday (duals) on Baldy’s Race Arena. More than 260 athletes are due for one of the West’s largest freestyle contests, SVSEF Program Director Andy Ware said.
