Carey boys, WRHS girls notch cage wins

Cutthroat boys also win on road

The Carey School boys’ varsity basketball team overcame a major hurdle on the path to February’s Northside Conference tournament with a 66-62 overtime league win over host Castleford on Tuesday night.

Carey (8-5, 3-0 league) overcame Castleford’s 50% field goal shooting by forcing 25 Wolves’ turnovers and making 18 steals en route to the fourth consecutive Panther triumph. The Carey boys shot 15-for-20 (75%) at the free throw line, or 13% better than their average.

Panther sophomore Nate Adamson (17.5 ppg) led the way with 25 points on 10-for-20 field goal shooting. It was his seventh 20-plus effort in the last nine games. He added 4 assists and 7 steals. For the game, the Wolves out-rebounded Carey 35-27, but the Panthers did better on the offensive boards and committed only 12 turnovers.

Other contributors: Jordan Dilworth 17 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals; Sheldon Hansen 11 points, 7 boards, 3 steals; Jayce Koudelka 5 points; Matt Whitworth 4 points and 2 rebounds; Patrick Baird 2 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals; and Gunner Thompson 2 points and 2 rebounds.

Carey’s boys travel to Camas County (2-8) for another league game today, Friday.

In other midweek action:

( The Wood River High School girls’ varsity squad (2-12, 1-6) held it together down the homestretch on the road Tuesday and beat the host Canyon Ridge Riverhawks (3-11, 1-5) 38-29 for its first Great Basin Conference win of the season.

Leading scorer Sydney Tidwell (10.0 ppg) had 13 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots as the Wolverines outscored Canyon Ridge 21-13 after halftime to split the season series with the Riverhawks. Assistant coach J.C. Nemecek said the team “played hard-nosed defense and hit the floor for every loose ball,” to keep the lead.

Ciceley Peavey made a clutch 3-pointer and Tidwell scored 4 points in the final stanza to preserve the victory.

Other Hailey contributors: Peavey 9 points, 6 assists, 2 steals; Hannah Belloli 9 points, 2 assists, 2 blocks; Sammy Sutton 2 points, 4 boards; Haylee Pettit 2 points, 2 rebounds; Kenya Schott 2 points, 1 assist; and Rory Cole 1 point, 4 boards.

Wood River, which hosted Burley Thursday, will entertain the Twin Falls Bruins (12-4, 7-0) Saturday, Jan. 19 in make-up games on the Hailey floor. The varsity game starts at 2:30 p.m. The freshman game has been canceled.

( Freshman Gunner Gibson scored a season-best 17 points including four 3-pointers as the Community School boys’ varsity basketball team ended a three-game losing streak with a 39-29 Northside Conference road win over Bliss Tuesday.

Gibson (5 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists) had an excellent all-around game as the Cutthroats (3-8, 1-2 league) built a 25-9 halftime lead and swept the season series with Bliss. Leading TCS scorer Taylor Adler (10.3 ppg) added 12 points along with 8 rebounds and 4 steals.

Other Cutthroats at Bliss were: Doug DuFur 5 points and 3 boards, Bobby Corker 3 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals; Reed Roudabush 2 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals; Nick Krekow 5 boards and 2 steals; Colton Sholtis 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

( The Wood River boys (5-7, 1-3 league) came up against the reigning Great Basin Conference champion Twin Falls Bruins (8-4, 3-0) on Wednesday and dropped a 61-24 road decision to last year’s State 4A third-place team. Kevin Hernandez scored 7 points, Alec Nordsieck 6 and Jon Scott 6 for Wood River, which plays at Minico today.
