Get out of jail with Visa

Court implements new system for paying fines, fees and bail

It’s not exactly a “get out of jail free” card, but people facing charges in Blaine County can now use Visa, MasterCard or Discover credit or debit cards to pay fines, court fees and even bond out of jail.

Until now, acceptable methods of payment were cash, check or money orders.

With the new system that went into effect Monday, payments can be made through Idaho Court Pay, accessible online at www.courtpay.idaho.gov. Idaho Court Pay notifies either the court or jail when payment has been made. The service is available 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

Idaho Court Pay will charge what is referred to as a “convenience fee” and the Blaine County court system will charge a $2 “handling fee.” For posting bail, there is also a $10 “jail bonding fee.”

Blaine County Clerk JoLynn Drage described the new system as a “convenience that’s being offered to the public.” It comes about because of a new rule approved by the Idaho Supreme Court, which administers judicial proceedings for the state of Idaho.

“It’s going to go into all counties eventually,” Drage said. “We’re just one of the first ones to get it going.”
