New city administrator takes reins

Sun Valley’s new city administrator is now on the job.

Susan Robertson, who was hired in late November, began her duties Monday morning. On Monday afternoon, city officials and employees held a reception for her, complete with cake and a welcome speech by Mayor Dewayne Briscoe.

“I’m really enthusiastic with the administrative team we have in the city now,” he said at the reception, referring also to City Clerk Hannah Stauts and City Treasurer and Finance Manager Angela Walls, who began serving in those capacities in October. “It’s an excellent team.”

Robertson, 53, who left a job as village manager of Fox Point, Wisc., (which she has held since 1995) to work at Sun Valley, said she is looking forward to living in the valley.

“I had a great job, but this is a great place to come to,” she said at the reception. “I’m thrilled to be here.”

In an interview, she said she expects the summer will be her favorite season in the valley, but hopes to pick up some new winter activities as well, such a snowshoeing.

As far as her new job is concerned, for which she will earn a salary of $125,000, Robertson said her goals are to foster good working relationships with Briscoe, the City Council and the city’s employees, and also with the officials and employees of other Blaine County municipalities. She also said it was important to her to re-establish the credibility of both the city and the position of city administrator on a long-term basis.

In November 2012, the city terminated its contract with former City Administrator Sharon Hammer with no stated cause. Robertson is the first permanent administrator the city has hired since then. During the past year, the city has been investigated by the Blaine County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for alleged misuse of public funds by city employees during 2009 through 2011. Thomas has said he will not file criminal charges, but that city management was “lax” during those years, which led to a “culture of entitlement” at City Hall.

“I believe in good ethical government and will continue to promote that,” Robertson said at the reception.
