Grab a bowl

Serve the hungry

Volunteers with no fear of getting dirty get together annually with Boulder Mountain Clayworks to create art bowls for sale to raise money for The Hunger Coalition. Express file photo

    There are 3,090 children and adults in this community who do not have enough to eat, according to The Hunger Coalition.
   For the past three years, the Empty Bowls project has put a dent in that need by inviting the public to volunteer time and talent to make ceramic bowls with Boulder Mountain Clayworks.
   Those bowls are then sold at a special luncheon, to be held this year on Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood from noon to 2 p.m.
   Professional and amateur artisans and students of The Community School have created 300 bowls, which guests can purchase for $20 each and fill with a savory soup or chili donated by local restaurants and caterers. The lunch also includes salad, bread and dessert.
   Participants include: Atkinsons’ Markets, Bigwood Bread, CK’s Real Food, Della Mano, Esta, Perry’s, Rolling in Dough, Sayvour, Starbucks, Sun Valley Company, Toni’s Ice Cream and Wallee Lange.
   Modeled after the international grassroots Empty Bowls Project, the purpose is to raise awareness about the issue of hunger and funds to help.
   Boulder Mountain Clayworks donates all supplies and studio time, hosts special bowl-making sessions open to the public, and lends hands-on guidance for all participants.
