Farrington, Josey make pipe finals
In a deep field of 130 riders, Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Snowboard Gold Team riders Kaitlyn Farrington, 23, and Chase Josey, 17, both qualified for the halfpipe finals of the 2013 Sprint U.S. Grand Prix Saturday at Copper Mountain, Colo.
Farrington had the third-best qualifying score out of 45 competitors in Thursday’s qualifying on Main Vein run at Copper Mountain. She ended up finishing fifth, the third American, with a best score of 69.50 in Saturday’s finals behind winner Torah Bright of Australia (85.75).
Josey, fourth in halfpipe at the 2012 FIS Junior World Championships in Sierra Nevada, Ca., was the third qualifier out of four finalists from the No. 1 heat Thursday. In Saturday’s finals Josey ended up eighth of 16 finalists with a score of 75, behind winner Nathan Johnstone of Australia (94.75).
In the finals, Josey posted six consistent runs with scores ranging from 74 to 80. The top seven men ranged in age from 20 to 24, so Josey was an up-and-comer. Athletes gained valuable FIS Olympic qualifying points in addition to 5Star World Snowboard Tour-level points.
Park Penguins hockey starts
Atkinson Park’s youth hockey program for kids in grades 2-5 begins today, Wednesday, Jan. 16 and continues through Feb. 13. Meeting times are usually Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:30-4 p.m. For this week only, it will be Wednesday and Thursday. Cost is $35 per person for members of the Atkinson Park After School Rec, or $65 if you aren’t a member of the program.
B, B+ Hockey results

Scoring for Vipers in their 8-1 rout of Rockets were Scott Seaward (4 goals), Biche Rudigoz (2) and Dan Choma (2). Ned Burns scored for Rockets. And Rob Prew scored twice for Hutch’s in their 4-1 win over Sharks (John Curtum 1).

Flounders got 4 goals from John Baker, 2 by Jim Slanetz and singles by Dave Fluetsch and Chris Peterson in an 8-7 victory over Sharks (Todd Avison 2, Cortum, Dan Gorham, Bill Sprong, Seaward and Hemmings).
Aardvarks and Rockets skated to a 4-4 tie. Hemmings (2 goals), Shafer and Dillon Witmer lit the light for Aardvarks. Rockets scorers: Slanetz, Ken Pratt, Ned Burns and Avison.
Arkoosh Cup at Rotarun on Sunday
Hailey’s Rotarun Ski Area hosts the Arkoosh Cup ski races for kids Sunday, Jan. 20. The 47th annual Arkoosh Cup begins Jan. 20 at 9 a.m.
Awards will be presented to the fastest girl and boy, as well as the top-five girls in boys in each age category—4-and-under, ages 5-6, plus Ski Team and Non-Ski Team divisions for ages 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12. Kids 7-12 compete on a larger race course. Kids up to age six will race on a shorter course.
Rotarun is open for night skiing Wednesdays and Fridays from 6-9 p.m., plus weekends on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sundays 12-4 p.m.
Sign up for Town Series
Teams are signing up for the 22nd annual Sun Valley Town Series of Wednesday team ski races on Baldy. Alpine team racing starts Wednesday, Jan. 23 and lasts through March 27. Each Wednesday race begins at 11 a.m. Sign up at Warm Springs Lodge Race Desk.
This year, the Town Series will use two different venues. The first races on Jan. 23 will be on Lower Warm Springs, and the second races Jan. 30 on the traditional Cozy venue.
Dates for the 2013 series of dual modified giant slalom races (with that day’s party locations in parentheses) are:

Team cost is the same as last year, $360. Telemarkers, snowboarders and downhillers are welcome. If a team signs up after the first day, cost is $400.
Pond Hockey Classic returns Saturday, Sunday
The city of Ketchum and Blaine County Recreation District present the sixth annual Idaho Pond Hockey Classic Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 19-20 at Christina Potters Ice Rink located at Ketchum’s Atkinson Park. Format is 4-on-4 and double elimination (no goalies).
Weather permitting, competition will take place in the “B Division” (beginners and intermediates) on Saturday starting at 9 a.m., and in the “A Division” Sunday at 10 a.m. Cost is $120 for each six-member team, or $20 per person.

Boxing smoker in Hailey
All ages, abilities and skill levels are invited to try their luck at the 2013 Boxing Smoker Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Idaho National Guard Armory in Hailey. Headgear and gloves are provided for contestants in the fundraising event. Spectators will pay $10. Call 720-3519 to sign up.

Sawtooth Relay director Terry Hoebelheinrich is inviting Wood River Valley athletes to take part in the 22nd annual Sawtooth Relay on Saturday, June 8.
