It was a good night for the Carey High School girls’ and boys’ basketball teams Saturday on a road trip to Jerome for Northside Conference league games against the Lighthouse Christian Academy Lions.

Senior Jaide Parke (15.7 ppg) scored 24 points and eight Panthers ended up in the scoring column as Carey (7-6, 1-1 league) snapped a three-game losing skid with a 59-30 victory over the Lady Lions (5-6).

Other scorers for Carey coach Merrilee Sears were Lilly Rivera 10 points, Medin Cenarrusa 7, Ashley Durtschi 5, Morgan Parke 4, Angelica Zarate 4, Natalie Villaneuva 3 and Paige Koudelka 2. Matching their season-high scoring total, the Panthers enjoyed a 25-point first quarter and built a 38-13 lead by halftime.

Carey was coming off a 38-34 home loss to Richfield Friday—a game in which the Panthers led 18-13 at half. Jaide Parke scored 12 points, Rivera 11, Cenarrusa 9 and Morgan Parke 2. For Richfield (9-3), Danielle Edwards tallied 12 points.

With five league games remaining prior to the district tournament, Carey visits Camas County in Fairfield and goes to Castleford Saturday for another league challenge.

In Saturday’s late game, coach Dick Simpson’s Carey boys (7-5, 2-0 league) stretched their season-best winning streak to three games with a strong first half leading to a 67-56 league triumph over host Lighthouse Christian (9-3, 2-1).

“The kids played good defense,” said Simpson, whose team also had a season-high point total. “Matt Whitworth and Sheldon Hansen stepped up with double-doubles."

Leading scorer Nate Adamson (17.0 ppg) put up his fifth 20-plus scoring effort in the last six games with a game-high 21 points. Adamson added 3 assists and 3 steals to his totals.

Whitworth, who has stepped in for injured senior Francisco Gamino (knee), had a season-best 16 points on 6-for-11 field goal shooting along with a team-high 11 rebounds, 6 on the offensive boards. Hansen (15 points, 10 boards) shot 4-for-5 from the stripe as Carey was 14-for-21 from the free throw line.

Senior Jordan Dilworth (11.3 ppg) chipped in 7 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals. Gunner Thompson added a season-best 7 points. Former Carey player Garrett Lee of Lighthouse tallied 13 points.

On Thursday, Carey shot 50% from the field and made 21 steals in a 60-29 home league win over the Community School. Adamson led the way with 20 points and 7 steals. Dilworth added 10 points and 5 assists. Patrick Baird had 6 points, 6 boards and 2 blocks.

Carey’s boys traveled to Castleford Tuesday night and go to Camas County for another league game Friday, Jan. 18.
