It was a non-conference game, but the Community School and Camas County boys’ varsity basketball teams  battled like it was a championship contest on a chilly Friday at Sun Valley’s Fish Tank.

Camas County (2-7) hustled a little more in the final moments, made timely free throws and rallied past the Cutthroats 35-33 led by the aggressive play of senior guard Davey Knowlton (8 points, 3 steals). Knowlton’s three free throws in the final minute were decisive.

It was a close battle. The biggest lead was six points, and only a single point separated the two teams on 12 different occasions. Camas County and the Cutthroats (2-8, 0-2 league) will meet again in a conference game Feb. 8 in Fairfield.

Camas jumped to an 8-4 lead after one quarter. The scoring of junior Taylor Adler (10.1 ppg, 11 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists, 2 blocked shots) and freshman Gunner Gibson (9.6 ppg, 12 points, 4 boards, 4 steals, 1 block) led the Cutthroats to a 12-10 halftime lead.

Senior Colton Sholtis (8 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals) had a strong second half for the Fish. Others were Doug DuFur (4 boards), Reed Roudabush (2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists), Bobby Corker (3 assists), Nick Krekow (4 steals) and Ken Cheng (4 rebounds).

The Cutthroats out-rebounded Camas 33-26 but made 8 of their 17 turnovers in the final eight minutes.

Musher sophomore Isaac Simon (13 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block) got Camas off and running with 7 of his team’s 10 points before half. Another Musher soph, Jordan Moore (6 points, game-high 11 rebounds, 2 blocked shots) did all his scoring in the second half.

Other Musher producers were junior Jack Simon (4 points, 6 rebounds) and freshman Erick Peterson (4 points, 3 rebounds, 5 steals).

Thursday night, the Cutthroats met up with a hot-shooting Carey team (50% from the field) and dropped a 60-29 conference decision on the Panther hardwoods. The Cutthroats made 29 turnovers and Carey came up with 21 steals.

Ninth-grader Gibson (13 points, 4 boards, 2 steals) returned to the Sun Valley lineup after five games from an injury and had his strongest game. Also a factor was Adler (8 points, 4 boards, 2 assists).

The Cutthroats host the Castleford Wolves Thursday, Jan. 17 with the boys’ junior varsity at 4:30 p.m. and boys’ varsity at 7:30 p.m. In between, the Cutthroat JV girls stage their “Senior Night” game at 6 p.m.
