Airport Authority sees turnover

Bowman, Burke leave; McBryant to serve as vice-chair

Change seemed to be a theme of the Friedman Memorial Airport Authority meeting on Wednesday, as two board members left, one joined and a new vice-chair was elected.

Airport Manager Rick Baird started the meeting by honoring authority Chair Tom Bowman and former authority Vice-Chair Martha Burke.

Bowman is stepping down from his seat at the end of the month, following his resignation from the Board of County Commissioners in October. Bowman agreed to remain on the Airport Authority until his replacement, County Commissioner Jacob Greenberg, could come up to speed on the complex issues involved.

Burke resigned from the Airport Authority board in December following an authority meeting during which she commented that she was “not being allowed to compromise” by the city of Hailey, which she represented. Burke later said she felt that she was unable to function as an effective representative of the city. She remains on the Hailey City Council, and has been replaced on the authority by Hailey Mayor Fritz Haemmerle.

Baird said Bowman and Burke gave a great service to the community by serving on the authority, and presented each with a decanter and glasses engraved with the Fly Sun Valley logo.

“I feel like serving on the authority board is like being mayor,” said Baird, who served as mayor of Carey. “[You] love the job, but half of the people think you’re a schmuck, half of them think you’re pretty cool, and it changes from day to day.”

Burke said serving on the board has been an “amazing experience.” Bowman said the authority members he was leaving behind are dedicated to doing the right thing.

“We have our differences sometimes on what’s right for the community,” he said, “but each of these folks will fight fiercely for what they believe.”

Hailey Airport Authority board member Susan McBryant was elected as the new vice-chair. McBryant will run the authority’s Feb. 12 airport meeting, and a new chair will be elected in March.

County representative Larry Schoen was appointed to replace McBryant as authority secretary and will be responsible for ensuring that correct minutes are taken.
