With snow flying, teams sign up for Town Series

Wednesday ski racing begins Jan. 23 on Baldy

Mike Wrobel of the Sun Valley Race Department said it all Thursday morning with the snow still dumping on Baldy.

“We weren’t expecting the eight or nine inches, but the skiing is awesome, people like our new race venue and we’re looking forward to another great Sun Valley Town Series.”

Indeed it’s here again!

Teams are signing up for the 22nd annual Sun Valley Town Series of Wednesday team ski races on Baldy. And they’re signing up already.

Wrobel said, “We already have 30 people signed up. That’s a lot for two weeks before the Town Series begins.”

Alpine team racing starts Wednesday, Jan. 23 and lasts through March 27. Each Wednesday race begins at 11 a.m. There is a one-week break during the Presidents’ Day holiday—with no racing Feb. 20—and two other one-week breaks during March.

This year, the Town Series will use two different venues. The first races on Jan. 23 will be on Lower Warm Springs, and the second races Jan. 30 on the traditional Cozy venue.

Wrobel said, “We’ll try to flip-flop the venues over the course of the season and see how it plays out. The visibility will be better on Warm Springs, and the course will be a little shorter there, better for beginners. We’ll try to go back-and-forth as we can.”

Once again, Town Series sponsors are Sun Valley Resort and Watkins Distributing.

Wrobel said racers should sign up as soon as possible at the Warm Springs Lodge Desk. Up to 300 racers on four-member teams enjoy the seven-week racing series each year.

Last year, zero was a good thing for the Scott USA team in the Sun Valley Town Series. Scott USA featuring John Zuck, John Reagle, Toby Arnett and Jeff Page went wire to wire with six straight 0.00-point efforts to secure the team championship of the 35-team series.

In second place for the season with four 0.00 efforts in the six scoring weeks was Sutterly Fabulous (3.13) with John Summers, Mikie Geron, Mark Masur and Georgie Suttor. In third place was Grateful Shred with Randi DuBois, Jerry Mitchell, Tommy Richardson and Mike Lafferty.

Season ski pass winners last March were Bob Buchanan of Sofa Kings, Jeff Page of Scott USA, Charlotte Gourlay of PK’s and Mikie Geron of Sutterly Fabulous.

Dates for the 2013 series of dual modified giant slalom races (with that day’s party locations in parentheses) are:

- Wednesday, Jan. 23 (Whiskey Jacques' in Ketchum); Jan. 30 (Mahoney’s in Bellevue), Feb. 6 (Cornerstone in Ketchum), Feb. 13 (Wicked Spud in Hailey), Feb. 27 (Lefty’s Bar & Grill in Ketchum), March 13 (Grumpy’s in Ketchum) and Wednesday, March 27 (Apple’s Bar & Grill at the base of Warm Springs).

The names of 20 racers from the top five teams in the series are entered into a drawing for the grand prize of four Sun Valley 2013-14 season ski passes. That drawing occurs during the Town Series race party March 27 at Apple’s.

Team cost is the same as last year, $360. Telemarkers, snowboarders and downhillers are welcome. If a team signs up after the first day, cost is $400.

Format is fastest single runs on five of the seven Wednesdays, and combined two runs on Feb. 13 and March 27. Call 622-6356 to sign up, or email svrace@sunvalley.com.
