Encroachments don’t cause snowy roads

In regard to the story in the Jan. 4 issue (“Hulen Meadows landscaping encroaches on county”), I was the manager for the Hulen Meadows Water Co. and Owner’s Association for more than 20 years, and a resident since 1987. Landscaping in the right of way has little to do with the amount ice on the roadways.

     Granted, the county has every right to enforce what is built in the right of way, but it is inaccurate and misleading for county Operations Director Char Nelson to claim that ice is formed on the roadways because “there is no place to put the snow.”

     Last year, the amount of ice on the roadways was especially dangerous. Most of those roadways had little or no landscaping in the right of way, but still had ice stretching across the entire street.

     Lower Paintbrush Lane entering the subdivision had tons of ice, and yet there are no encroachments in the right of way to inhibit snow removal operations and allow the ice to melt. Additionally, the intersections of Yarrow and Paintbrush had dangerous amounts of ice, and yet there are few encroachments into the right of way by homeowners in this area.

     Normally, the county does an excellent job of removing the snow in the subdivision. Earlier plowing and extra sand spread on the roadways would do more to eliminate the ice problems than would removing encroachments in the county right of way.
