Carol Holding brought back Konditorei

We stopped by the newly remodeled Konditorei in the Sun Valley Mall on Dec. 22.

Some time ago, Carol Holding was quoted in the local press expressing a desire to bring back this once popular eatery that had lapsed into moribund inattention before subsequently closing.

Years ago, it was the closest thing to the cozy gemütlichkeit that has been omnipresent throughout European ski resorts and with which many valley residents are familiar. Skiers come off the hills and enjoy a glühwein, hot chocolate, a beer or two, some fattening pastries and mindless, multilingual chatter about the joys of skiing.

Ever gracious, Mrs. Holding showed up unannounced, moving around with the help of ski poles to stop and chat with customers at almost every table and mix with the bustling kitchen help. There were lots of hugs, happy greetings and comments on the revived restaurant and crisp efficiency of new wait staff dealing with an opening-day crowd. A class act.

She had catalyzed the restoration of the Konditorei as she had revitalized Dollar by pushing for a new lodge years ago.

With the mountains blessed by early snow, skiers were arriving to find most alpine runs in excellent shape and groomed Nordic trails from the Sun Valley Club environs and north to Galena. Many, if not most, were viewing the sweeping landscape changes surrounding the Lodge for the first time.

Carol Holding continues to exemplify the principle she has practiced for years—that taking care of customer needs does count.
