Sun Valley mayor pays taxes

By BRENNAN REGO

Sun Valley Mayor Dewayne Briscoe paid $33,230.02 to Blaine County in delinquent property taxes on Wednesday, Dec. 2, including $549.10 in late charges and $5,071.98 in interest.

According to Blaine County Treasurer Vicki Sisiam, Briscoe owed taxes for the first part of 2009, both parts of 2010 and 2011 and the first part of 2012 for two properties, a 17,000-square-foot property on Fairway Loop in Sun Valley and a garage in the International Village complex in Ketchum. Sisiam confirmed Tuesday that Briscoe has paid everything he owes.

Briscoe said he was unaware he owed the money until he was informed by an Idaho Mountain Express reporter during an interview late last month. A notice of his delinquency for the second part of 2009 had been published by Blaine County in the Dec. 19 issue of the Mountain Express.

“I don’t know how he could have not known about it,” Sisiam said. “We sent at least four notice letters to him before we sent one by certified mail that the post office confirmed as having been received.”

Briscoe said “someone else” picks up his mail for him and the notices must have been included in packages forwarded to his late son, Brian Briscoe. The mayor said he turned over management of the properties to Brian Briscoe in 2007. He also said Brian Briscoe had been in the process of putting the properties into a trust that should have been set up to pay the taxes automatically, but that he died on July 14, 2012. Briscoe said a “misunderstanding” or “oversight” must have occurred during the management transitions in 2007 and again last summer.

“The citizens should know that since I bought the property in 1979, I’ve paid over $240,000 in property taxes on that property,” he said, referring to the property on Fairway Loop.
