‘The Waverly Gallery’

    Complicated relationships from family to the mob are often studied in Kenneth Lonergan’s work.
   The screenwriter behind such films as “You Can Count on Me,” “Gangs of New York” and “Analyze This” had his first success with the play “This Is Our Youth,” exploring the timeless issues of adolescence and maturity, as well as the Reagan era in which it is set. The characters feel adrift in a country of the 1960s-style liberalism.
   “The Waverly Gallery” is a piece based on his Greenwich Village Gallery that he wrote and produced in 1999. As part of its ongoing play-reading series, nexStage will hold a reading of the play on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 6:30 p.m.
   The cast giving away their talents for free includes Dawson Howard, Keith Moore, Rick Hoffman, Patsy Wygle and Kathy Wygle. It is directed by Jon Kane.
   Concerning a family matriarch’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, the story is both poignant and funny. It explores her fight to retain her independence and the effect of her decline on her family, especially her grandson.
   The New York Times called the play “stirring and soulful, comic drama. Waverly is often deeply funny. It is both painful and hilarious.”
   The show runs for about an hour and 45 minutes. Free refreshments will be served in the lobby before the show and during intermission.
