Now what?

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

Okay, we got through 2012 and escaped the fiscal cliff disaster. Gun shops are flourishing and Crapo is doing shots. Luna was shot down but Idaho is still last in education.

The rich will have to pay more taxes but most of us are still one paycheck from the street. It’s cold outside and our power and gas bills are soaring. Food prices are up and we’re still overweight. We live in the beautiful mountains but pay for it dearly. A box store is coming but not for six months or so. What do we do?

We change our attitudes. It’s our only hope. Some Eastern philosophers say, “It’s already been taken care of, so relax and stop worrying.” Ofttimes, that’s hard to swallow but it’s a great option. “Don’t worry, be happy” as the Dominicans say as they work six jobs.

For us, we have to develop a way of thinking that will allow us to be happy again. Happy like we all were when we first arrived in the Wood River Valley, worked three jobs and reveled in our surroundings. Did we have fun or what?

It’s a little harder now but we should still try to have fun—attitude is the key. The answer is to enjoy each day and appreciate where we live. Get a loan to buy some gas and drive around our area and remember how it was in “the old days.”

Don’t go at rush hour in the morning or at late afternoon unless you have an audio tape of some girth. I listen to “War and Peace” driving to Hailey. Last year, I finished the Bible on tape. What an eye-opener!

I love to watch football on television but if everything has been taken care of, it kind of diminishes the excitement of rooting for your favorite teams. I can live with that. It would be like watching a rebroadcast of a game that was played last night but so what if I don’t know the outcome.

You see, we really don’t know the outcomes in our lives therefore; we might as well enjoy them. Have a wonderful and Happy New Year in 2013. As Marley says,”Everything is going to be all right!”

Nice talking to you.
