Baker Creek is new site for Perch’s Snowmaker

Cross-country ski race is Saturday

A shortage of parking at Prairie Creek, combined with the popularity of the post-holiday Nordic race, has caused a change of the staging area for the 2013 Elephant’s Perch Snowmaker event.

The Snowmaker, formerly called Prairie Creek Snowmaker, is set for Saturday, Jan. 5 starting at 10 a.m.—now at Baker Creek preceded from 8:30-9:45 a.m. by day-of-race registration at that location.

It is sponsored by the Perch with the cooperation of the Blaine County Recreation District (BCRD) and Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation. All races will be mass start.

Race organizer Bob Rosso said the cross-country ski race will now start and finish at Baker Creek 15 miles north of Ketchum along S.H. 75, instead of Prairie Creek which is located 3.5 miles further up the highway toward Galena Lodge.

“We changed the start and finish to avoid the parking problems,” said Rosso. “We’ll start and finish at the north end of Baker Creek by the 15k Harriman Trail marker. We’ll have longer courses, but it should be really fun and different from the past.

“The long course will measure 22k (13.6 miles) and the short course 11k (6.8 miles). The long course follows the Harriman Trail uphill to Prairie Creek, then goes up Prairie Creek and turns around and has a long, rolling downhill back to Baker Creek.

“The shorter course will go up to the Prairie Creek bridge and back to Baker Creek. The Snowmaker courses used to be 15k and 7.5k and they were up and back at Prairie Creek.”

Also Saturday, there is a 4k out-and-back course for little kids, starting at 10:15 a.m. Organizers suggest participants drive to the north entry of Baker Creek near the helicopter landing area. Signs will direct you to parking.

Refreshments and prize drawings will be offered after the racing has been completed.

Entry fee is $10 per person, or free for ski teamers. Participants should have a trail pass. All money from entry fees will go to BCRD, Rosso said.

Last year the Prairie Creek Snowmaker attracted 153 skiers. The 15k winners were Nicole DeYong, 29, of Ketchum in 49:25 and Tom Smith, 22, of Salt Lake City, Utah in 41:58. The 7.5k winners were Zoe Roy, 24, of Salt Lake City in 24:42 and Ketchum Wilt, 17, of Ketchum in 22:15.
