Eliot Lipp brings electronic dance music to Whiskey’s

    Eliot Lipp has made a lot of sacrifices to bring his particular brand of electronic dance music to Whiskey Jacques’ on Thursday night. That includes forgoing a bed in the early days to allow him to buy the gear he needed to bring it to an audience.
   “When I first moved to L.A. I kept putting off buying a bed because I was buying so much gear,” he said. “I actually made a makeshift bed out of cardboard and bubble wrap and slept on it for a year.“
   The young producer is known for keeping the music fresh and has participated in numerous electronica festivals. He’s been featured on NPR in Chicago and had his song “Wonderland” previewed on music mogul Jay Z’s Life+Times web hub.
   Having started on piano, Lipp crosses and connects all genres to produce his style, which he converts to analog synthesized sound. He counts blues and jazz greats like Billy Holiday and modern hip-hop as influences, and chops up music from numerous sources to remix for the dance floor. He prefers to work wordlessly, because, he said, “it leaves the narrative out and the listener can create their own story.”
   The content of his sound comes from “more heart than head,” he said.
   “I get ideas for stuff I want to try all the time, but I don’t get the motivation to work unless I’m really feeling something.”
   His album “Shark Wolf Rabbit Snake” is available for download at www.eliotlipp.com and his show at Whiskey’s on Thursday at 9 p.m. is $7 in advance and $10 at the door.
   Who should go? Lipp said everyone will find something in his music, but if he had to make a guest list it would be “college students, baristas, record store clerks, stoners, hippies and hipsters, homosexuals and heterosexuals, Mexicans, Asians, young professionals, graphic designers and other DJs and producers.”
   Sounds like a worthy way to beat the minus digits outside.
