Students create planters for Red Cross

    Wood River Middle School seventh-graders are selling hand-painted, original planters with amaryllis plants to raise money for the Red Cross and local charities.
    The project is part of an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme project that concludes with an art walk and sale of the amaryllis planters, which were designed and painted by the students.
    The theme for the students’ project was:  “Who Am I and How Can I Make a Difference?”  As well as through art, this question has been explored through literature and writing in the students’ language arts classes.  
    Students had to determine the ratio and spacing for their designs in math, learn about symbolism in social studies and learn about botany and planting in science class. Students have also been working on multimedia persuasive presentations to gain their peers’ votes for a local charity of their choice.
    The planters and plants will be available for purchase on Friday, Dec. 21, from 8 a.m. to noon in  the Wood River Middle School library.
    All proceeds from the art walk will be donated to the Red Cross as well as a local charity, which is to be determined by the students. Students are asking for a $20 minimum donation.
