Sun Valley OKs $250K marketing contract

Approval comes 2 months after start of fiscal year

Express Staff Writer

The Sun Valley City Council has renewed a contract for services with the Sun Valley Marketing Alliance, voting 3-1 to give the organization $250,000 in fiscal 2013—$106,000 less than it did last year.

Following a 3-1 vote on Aug. 16 to reduce the city’s funding to the organization (Councilwoman Michelle Griffith voted no) and many months of careful scrutiny of the contract, the council unenthusiastically approved the allocation Thursday, Dec. 6, more than two months past the Oct. 1 beginning of the fiscal year. Councilman Franz Suhadolnik, who has spoken against the use of public money for marketing purposes during several council meetings and who has said numerous times the organization should be more “transparent,” voted no.

Before approving the contract, the council accepted an amendment by Councilman Bob Youngman to require that the Marketing Alliance provide it with “detailed salary information” about its employees. Youngman also requested that written quarterly progress reports be provided to the council before the Marketing Alliance presents its quarterly progress report to the council in person.

“We’re playing pingpong with the Sun Valley Marketing Alliance,” Mayor Dewayne Briscoe said, referencing the many changes to the contract the council has insisted on over the past few months. “It’s time to move forward on this.”

The city of Ketchum is providing the Marketing Alliance with $456,000 this year.

Youngman said he would like to see the organization become more “self-sufficient.”
