SV5B swimmers join big Boise YMCA field

Johnson earns high-point before Turkey Day


Sixteen members of the year-round Sun Valley 5B swim team competed against 610 swimmers from 29 teams from four states at the annual three-day Boise YMCA Thanksgiving Invitational Nov. 16-18.

Nearly all SV5B athletes had exemplary finishes during one of the largest Northwest age-group meets of the year.

High-point kudos went to Maddie Johnson, 14. She won three events in the 13-14 age group. They were 100 butterfly (1:00.97), 50 back (29.64 seconds) and 200 fly (2:14.11).

Johnson also placed second in three races. They were 400 Individual Medley, 100 back and 200 fly. She picked up points in 200 back and 200 free with personal-best times.

In another individual highlight, Kaedi Fry finished second in the 15-and-over 200 breast.

SV5B coach Brian Gallagher highlighted the success of his competitive squad, which has an age range of 8-18. Personal-best times included:

Kaedi Fry set personal-best times in the 50, 100 and 200 free;

Ashley Dreyfus had two big swims in the 13-14 500 and 1000 free, dropping 5.60 seconds and 19.60 seconds respectively, and in 100 and 200 breast, 100 and 200 free and 50 fly;

Mia Smith swam personal-best times in the 15-and-over 200 free, 100 breast, 50 free and 100 back;

Nyle Prabowo swam in his first competition for SV5B, finishing 10th in the 13-14 boys’ 50 breast and 50 back;

Katherine Lemma has solid swims in 13-14 100 and 200 free, 50 fly, 100 breast and in 200 breast which she raced for the first time;

Danielle Doerflein swam her best times in the 13-14 50, 100 and 200 breast, 50 and 100 free;

Lisa Hart had huge improvements in the 15-and-over 200 IM dropping 11.66 seconds, and 50 and 100 breast;

Mason Johnson had a fabulous 500 free in the boys’ 11-12 group, finishing 7th with a drop of 54.88 seconds. He also improved times in 50, 100 and 200 back, 50 and 100 free, and 50 fly;

Gus Kimball swam best times in the 15-and-over 200 IM and 50 fly and 100 back;

Zack Deal turned in personal records for 11-12 50 breast, 100 free and 100 IM;

Eva Carlson had her biggest time improvement to date in the 9-10 200 free (dropping 10.37 seconds). She also dropped times in 50 and 100 breast, 50 back, 50 and 100 free;

Faye Prekeges rounded out great swims with improvements in the 9-10 50 and 200 free, 50 and 100 back, and 100 IM;

Petra Glenn had good time drops in the 9-10 50 and 200 free, 50 and 100 back;

Isaac Loomis, swimming in his second meet for SV5B, swam his first 200 free and 100 fly, and dropped time in his 100 free in boys’ 9-10;

Maggie Deal swam her second meet for SV5B and raced very well in her first 100 free and 100 IM in the 9-10 class.

Relay highlights were:

The girls’ 12-and-under 200 medley team of Faye Prekeges, Eva Carlson, Maggie Deal and Petra Glenn took 11th; they also swam the 200 free relay placing 9th;

In girls’ 13-and-over, the SV5B team of Mia Smith, Danielle Doerflein, Ashley Dreyfus and Katherine Lemma placed 11th in the 200 medley; and the team of Katherine Lemma, Danielle Doerflein, Lisa Hart and Ashley Dreyfus finished 9th in the 200 free relay.

Gallagher continues to train with SV5B weekdays at Ketchum’s Y pool. The team’s USA Swimming-sanctioned racing slate resumes in January.
