Man pleads not guilty in felony gun case

Accused of unlawful firearm possession

A 28-year-old Ketchum man, who court records state is a convicted felon, pleaded not guilty Monday to unlawful possession of a firearm, a crime that is a felony in Idaho.

Samuel Jesse Sabin entered his plea at arraignment before Judge Robert J. Elgee in Blaine County 5th District Court. A jury trial was scheduled to begin on April 3, 2013.

Sabin, represented by Hailey attorney Keith Roark, remains incarcerated in the Blaine County jail on $15,000 bond. He has been in jail since Idaho State Police arrested him on Oct. 6.

According to court records, Sabin was charged with the new crime because of an earlier felony conviction of delivery of a controlled substance. Court records do not make it clear where and when the earlier conviction occurred.

A probable-cause affidavit filed in the case by ISP Trooper Berry Marquez states that Sabin was arrested when he was on a hunting trip with family members. Marquez wrote that he pulled a vehicle over that Sabin was driving on U.S. Highway 20 near Picabo because the officer saw “heavy smoke coming from the under carriage.”

Upon investigation, Marquez wrote that he determined that a shotgun in the vehicle was to be used by Sabin for bird hunting. Marquez wrote that Sabin was placed under arrest after an identification check showed that he was on “felony parole.”
