Panthers clamp down late, beat Pirates 50-42

First win for Carey boys

The Carey School boys made clutch fourth-quarter shots and got some key stops on the defensive end, turning a 35-35 nail-biter after three periods into a 50-42 home victory over the Hagerman Pirates last Friday on Carey’s hardwoods.

Senior Jordan Dilworth (19 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocked shots) had a monster game including four of Carey’s six 3-pointers. Winning their first game, the Panthers (1-1) shot 37% from the field including 6-for-21 from the circle. Hagerman fell to 0-2.

The 19 points were a career-best for Dilworth, who was 7-for-11 from the field including 4-for-6 from 3-point range. Carey coach Dick Simpson said, “Hagerman played Jordan pretty tight on defense, but there were times they trapped Nate (Adamson), and Nate got it to Jordan, who was open.”

Carey handled the ball well (only 12 turnovers) but needed all of its 19-14 edge in field goals because the Pirates shot 12-for-17 (71%) from the free throw line. Adamson (11 points, 5 assists, 3 steals) provided Carey with excellent offensive help.

The Panthers also had contributions from Patrick Baird (4 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 5 blocks), Gunner Thompson (6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists), Poncho Gamino (4 points, 4 boards, Sheldon Hansen (3 points, 5 rebounds) and Jayce Koudelka (3 points).

“I thought Gunner played well on the defensive end and Pat had some big rebounds for us, four on offense and four defense,” said Simpson.

Carey, a 1A Division 2 school, next clashes with two 2A opponents on a visit to Hazelton for a game with Valley Vikings Thursday, Dec. 6 and a home game against the Oakley Hornets on Friday, Dec. 7.

Valley (2-0), a state tournament team with a 19-4 record last winter, got a combined 40 points from Justin Johnson in season opening wins over Hansen and Raft River. Oakley (2-1) won the Dietrich Holiday Tournament consolation title 41-37 over Rimrock Saturday. Tournament champ Dietrich had beaten Oakley 59-40 Friday.

 

Carey tops Camas, Shoshone in girls’ hoops

Carey School girls’ varsity basketball coach Merrilee Sears keeps looking for an elusive winning streak, but she was also glad her team captured two out of their three games played over a busy three-day stretch last week.

The Lady Panthers (3-3) won at home 52-38 over the Camas County Mushers last Thursday, then came back Saturday and tucked away a hard-fought 34-30 victory at Shoshone. Friday, Hagerman topped Carey 60-41 on the Panther hardwoods.

Against Camas, senior Morgan Parke (11.8 ppg) scored a season-best 19 points and senior Jaide Parke (15.2 ppg) added 16 points. Lilly Rivera (7 points), Ashley Durtschi 4 and Medin Cenarrusa 4 helped Carey to a season-high offensive point total.

Stephanie Moore (11 points) and Taylor Gorringe (10) topped Camas.

Hagerman (5-0), behind 22 points by Jessica Regnier, scored in double digits each quarter Friday and coasted to its 19-point triumph at Carey. Jaide Parke (16), Morgan Parke (10), Cenarrusa (5), Angelica Zarate (5) and Rivera (4) led the home team.

Rivera, a junior, had the hot hand Saturday with three 3-pointers and a career-best 13 points as Carey rallied from a 13-8 halftime deficit and won on the tough Shoshone court 34-30. Jaide Parke led the way with 16 points and improved her career scoring to 933 points over four years.

Carey’s varsity enjoyed a breather early this week, then picks up again Friday, Dec. 7 with a home game against Oakley and also Saturday with 5 p.m. (JV) and 6:30 p.m. (varsity) home games against Challis (3-2). The Vikings, a 25-point winner over Carey Nov. 13, won at home 56-39 over the Mackay Miners Friday.
