Community School boys’ basketball players got their first taste of action Thursday, but the visiting Murtaugh Red Devils had the hot hands in the season hoops opener at the Fish Tank gym in Sun Valley.

With six players scoring in the first eight minutes, Murtaugh (1-2) jumped to a 20-5 first-quarter lead and posted its first triumph 57-24 over the host Cutthroats. The Red Devils (17 steals) out-rebounded the Cutthroats 37-26.

Senior Troy Baynes (16 points, 12 rebounds, 7 steals, 7 assists) was everywhere for Murtaugh and got major help from junior Kody Baynes (13 points, 10 boards, 3 steals, 3 assists) and sophomore Jose Miranda (14 points).

The Red Devils buried six 3-pointers. But first-year coach Mike Payne’s Cutthroats (0-1) also had some success (four 3-pointers) from the circle led by junior Bobby Corker (two 3-pointers, 5 rebounds, 1 block).

Other Cutthroat contributors included Doug DuFur (5 points, one 3-pointer, 4 rebounds, 2 steals), Reed Roudabush (4 points, 4 boards, 2 steals), Gunner Gibson (6 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists) and Nick Krekow (3 points, 2 blocked shots).

Colton Sholtis (3 rebounds, 3 steals) and Ben Swift (2 boards) chipped in for the Cutthroats.

Payne’s squad hosts the Bliss Bears (1-1) and their hot-shooting sophomore Dillon King (28.5 ppg) Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. and goes to the Jackpot (Nev.) Stateline Battle Tournament this weekend. The Cutthroats play the Jackpot varsity Friday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m.

Senior guard Ella Marks scored 22 points leading the Community School girls’ junior varsity basketball team to a 37-24 home win over the Murtaugh Red Devils Thursday.

Marks (two 3-pointers) tallied 12 of her game-high 22 in the first half as coach Erika Connelly’s Cutthroats (1-0) raced to a 20-4 lead in the season opener at the Fish Tank.

The Cutthroats resume their 14-game schedule Thursday, Dec. 6 with the Bliss Bears at 6 p.m. at the Fish Tank. They compete Friday at 6:30 p.m. against the Jackpot varsity at the Jackpot (Nev.)
