Hailey police investigate vehicle vandalism

3 cars damaged, 2 with Sheriff’s Office markings

Hailey police are investigating car vandalism that occurred in the city late last week. Three vehicles were damaged, two of them with Blaine County Sheriff’s Office markings.

Hailey Police Chief Jeff Gunter said Monday that the vandalism was reported Friday afternoon, suggesting that it occurred either Thursday night or early Friday morning. He said total damage was estimated at $2,050.

One of the vehicles with Sheriff’s Office markings is usually parked in the east parking lot at the Blaine County Courthouse. It is now out of police service and used for other county business.

The vehicle, a 1994 Chevrolet pickup, sustained a broken front windshield and a broken rear window on an attached camper shell. Gunter said someone also attempted to write the word “pig” on the vehicle with a rock. Damage to the pickup was estimated at $800.

Gunter said an in-service sheriff’s vehicle, a 2012 Ford Expedition, was also vandalized while it was parked at an officer’s home in the Deerfield area of east Hailey. Police estimated damage at $500 to the vehicle because of a broken front windshield.

The third vehicle, a 2005 Cadillac Escalade, was damaged in a parking lot at the Balmoral apartment complex in southeast Hailey.

“The windshield was broken out with a Corona beer bottle,” Gunter said, estimating damage at $750.

“We’re looking at all three as if they’re related,” the police chief said.

However, Sheriff Gene Ramsey said he does not relate the new vandalism to attacks on two Sheriff’s Office vehicles two years ago, when culprits attempted to light the cars on fire. Three juveniles were later convicted in that case.
