Sun Valley Co. representatives said the resort had a successful opening weekend and the company anticipates opening top-to-bottom skiing on both sides of Bald Mountain by Friday, Nov. 30.

Bald Mountain opened for the season on Thursday, Nov. 22, Thanksgiving Day.

“Opening weekend was excellent. It was fantastic,” Ski Patrol Director Mike Lloyd said. “The crowds were all really happy with the upper part of the mountain, and we had some good, sunny weather for Thanksgiving Day.”

Lloyd said the top section of Baldy “skied great” even though the snowpack might still look “a little bleak” from down below. He also said his team did not have to perform any rescues during the winter season’s first weekend.

“Everybody was really safe,” he said.

Sun Valley Co. spokesman Jack Sibbach said skier-counts were about the same as those of the past few years, and the resort’s directors were “pleased with the numbers.”

“We saw a lot of happy faces up there the first few days,” he said. “A lot of the guests at the lodge said the conditions were great.”

As of press deadline Tuesday, open runs on Baldy include: 42nd Street, Lower River Run, Kinderspielplatz, Ridge, Roundhouse Lane, Upper College, Cut Off, Lower Blue Grouse, Mid River Run, Upper Blue Grouse and Upper Holiday on the River Run Side. On the Warm Springs side, open runs include I-80, Upper Warm Springs and Upper Limelight. Christmas Bowl is the only open bowl.

Currently, lift access is available from the River Run base area only. Access to the top is offered via Roundhouse Express (the gondola) followed by Christmas lift. River Run lift is also open for people who want to ski laps on Lower River Run. All the other lifts are closed. (The Christmas lift was closed temporarily on Tuesday, and some skiers had to be downloaded on the gondola.)

However, Sibbach said the resort plans to open additional terrain Friday, including access to the top from the Warm Springs base via the Challenger lift. The Warm Springs Day Lodge is expected to open the same day. Sibbach said he expects that by Friday the resort will open Flying Squirrel, Lower Picabo and Lower Warm Springs on the Warm Springs side. On the River Run side, Roundhouse Slope and Lower Canyon should be open before the weekend.

Sibbach also said Dollar Mountain—which was open over Thanksgiving weekend—is now closed and will not reopen until Dec. 8.
