Community School sophomore Alexandra Harten, 15, became an U.S. Figure Skating gold medalist in Moves in the Field Nov. 18 in Boise.

She completed a series of eight increasingly challenging figure skating tests, demonstrating mastery of Moves in the Field at the highest level.

Harten’s achievement will be acknowledged on the USFS Web site and credited in Skater Magazine. She joins Community School senior Shayna Moellenberg, 18, and Wood River High senior Nicole Pratt, 17, as Sun Valley’s only USFS gold medalist junior competitive skaters.

Skating for the first time at age five, Harten quickly fell in love with its athletic and artistic sides. Over the years, she has enjoyed both regional success as a singles competitive free skater and national success as a theatrical skater.

Her competitive achievements include 2013 U.S. Figure Skating National Showcase Novice Light Silver Medalist and 2011 Sun Valley Summer Championships Most Outstanding Showcase Trophy winner.

She has competed as a singles skater locally and in Jackson Hole, Salt Lake, Boise, Spokane, Seattle, Phoenix, and southern California, and as a team member in three winning group showcase productions.

Balancing time between school, skating, community, and friends, Harten trains on and off ice five days a week. She maintains an excellent GPA, assists with the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club’s “Skate-With-Us” classes, and participates in community service programs.

She loves show skating.

Alex first performed in the Sun Valley Summer Ice Show’s kids’ number at age six. She is excited to become a professional member of Sun Valley’s “Summer On Ice” ensemble cast.

Harten credits her USFS gold medal and accomplishments in singles free skating to her primary coach, Holly Wheeler. Coach Judy Blumberg also contributed to Harten’s success in Moves in the Field.

Choreographer and theatrical skating coach, Gia Guddat, and coaches Craig Heath and Joel Dear, have also helped her skating mature in style, balance and on-ice presence.
