Haylee debuts for Utah State Aggies

Former Wood River High School girls’ basketball star Haylee Thompson didn’t waste any time making an impression for the Utah State University Aggies women’s basketball team Monday night.

Ten days shy of her 18th birthday and playing in her first official college game, 6-1 freshman forward Thompson came off the bench to play 12 minutes with 4 points, 2 offensive rebounds and a steal in Utah State’s season-opening 78-62 loss to Utah Valley (1-1) before 983 fans at Orem, Utah.

Subbed into the game at the six-minute mark, Thompson waited only 44 seconds before hitting a jump shot to tie the game 11-11. Unfortunately the Aggies shot poorly (21%) in the first half and fell behind 34-26 at the break. Thompson added a second-half layup cutting Utah Valley’s lead to 49-46.

First-year coach Jerry Finkbeiner’s Aggies won a Nov. 2 home exhibition game 81-72 over New Mexico Highlands as Thompson played 10 minutes with 2 points, 3 boards and a steal. The leading Aggie scorer in both games to date is senior guard Devyn Christensen (18-for-50 from the field) from Vallivue High School, Caldwell.

Utah State travels for its first six games of the 29-game season before opening at home in Logan Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. against Montana State. Thompson was Wood River’s top scorer last winter at 15.0 ppg and earned All-State status. She is the fourth-leading scorer in Wolverine annals with 780 points (10.7 ppg) in 73 games.
