Midgets make final in first tourney

High school hockey in Boise

It was a strong start for the Sun Valley Youth Hockey Midgets during the 10-team Century Link tournament Nov. 2-4 at Boise’s Ice World rink.

The Sun Valley high school skaters (ages 15-18) went 3-1-1 and placed second in the tournament, ultimately dropping the championship game 5-2 to Eagle/Rocky Mountain Nov. 4.

Making the title game was an achievement in itself, since Sun Valley had to survive a shootout in the semi-finals against Idaho Falls to advance into the final contest.

In that tense semi-final, Liam Jablonski and Mason Noyes scored for Sun Valley as the game ended 2-2 in overtime and went to the five-player shootout. Erik Wilander and Rickie Jeneson converted shootout goals for winners while goalie Willis Sanchez-duPont stopped four shots.

Coached by Tim Jeneson and Dave MacMillan, Sun Valley (18 goals in 5 games) also romped 8-1 over Bonneville/Hillcrest of Boise, beat Timberline of Boise 2-1 and tied Mountain View/Centennial 2-2.

Against Bonneville, Jeneson recorded a three-goal hat trick and Jablonski added two goals. Single goals came from Wilander (2 assists), Drew Barsch and Eli Conrad (4 assists). Sanchez-duPont made 12 saves.

Noyes and Sam Ruddell scored and Wilander assisted in the 2-1 win over Timberline, Sanchez-duPont stopping six shots. Goals came from Drew Barsch and Wilander in the 2-2 tie, assists to Conrad and Jack Swanson. And, in the championship game, Jablonski and Noyes scored.

Century Link tournament scoring totals: Wilander 3 goals/3 assists, Conrad 1/5, Jeneson 4/0, Jablonski 4/0, Noyes 3/0, Drew Barsch 2/0, Ruddell 1/0 and Swanson 0/1.

Last Friday, Sun Valley opened its 16-game Boise High School League (BHSL) season earning a 1-1 draw with Canyon County as Noyes tallied the equalizer in the final five seconds, assisted by Conrad.

The 20-player Sun Valley team has between 40 and 50 games on its season game schedule that started Nov. 2 and continues through mid-March. Besides the 16 BHSL games, there are five tournaments—the Boise meet, plus Sun Valley, Idaho Falls, Jackson Hole (Wyo.) and Salmon.

BHSL playoffs and the league tournament are set for March along with a separate State High School Hockey Tournament in Boise.

Coming up: On Friday, Nov. 16 at Ice World, Sun Valley vs. Boise at 6:30 p.m. and Sun Valley vs. Canyon County at 8:30 p.m. in BHSL games.

The Sun Valley high school tournament is set for Dec. 7-9. It’s one of five home Sun Valley Youth Hockey tournaments planned for 2012-13.

Others are Bantams (ages 13-14) Dec. 14-16, Squirts (9-10) on Jan. 11-13, the Girls Jan. 18-20, PeeWees (11-12) on Jan. 25-27 and the Mites Jamboree (Mini Mites, 5-6, and Mitey Mites, 7-8) on Saturday, March 2.

Rounding out the Midgets roster this season are Hunter Dean, Cameron Jenner, Reily Sibbach, Karel Kaiser, Hagan Barsch, Peter MacMillan, Roger Figge, George Everitt, Dylan Broman, Jack Seiller and Alex Schwartz.
