Keep Lower River Run trail for walkers

While I am pleased that Sun Valley Co. will be adding more mountain bike trails on Baldy, I am very concerned about the plan to close the Lower River Run trail to walkers and runners. Under the proposed plan, this trail will become a downhill-only mountain bike trail.

I strongly disagree with this plan. The Lower River Run trail is a gentle uphill trail that is great for short hikes and runs. Without the Lower River Run trail, the only uphill hiking access from the base of Baldy is the Bald Mountain Trail.

The Bald Mountain Trail has many steep and rocky sections, particularly in the lower part. With the closure of the Lower River Run trail, many hikers will be shut off from easy access to Baldy from the base of the mountain.

I had a baby this year, and I loved being able to hike with him up the Lower River Run trail without worrying about the rocks, roots, and steep sections of the Bald Mountain Trail. I saw many other walkers and runners during my hikes who were also enjoying this gentler trail.

If you think Sun Valley Co. should preserve access on the Lower River Run trail for foot traffic, or provide another walking trail that can replace the Lower River Run trail, please send your public comments as soon as possible to the Ketchum Ranger District atcomments-intermtn-sawtooth-ketchum@fs.fed.us or call the office at 622-0090.
